Towards integration in literary, cultural arenas
WAHID BASHIR
WEEKEND MAGAZINE (May 08 2010): A silent, slow but steady process is in progress in the domain of literature in Sindh. It is rather the revival of the pre-One Unit phenomenon, ie bringing the literature, writers and poets of Sindhi and Urdu languages closer for advancing towards ultimate integration.

The present initiative has been taken by the incumbent office-bearers of the Sindhi Adabi Sangat and Anjuman Taraqqi Pasand Musannefeen, Sindh. After prolonged discussions and deliberations it was decided to hold four literary seminars at different places in Sindh. The tentative programme was:

These seminars would be spread over a period of three months. There would be a particular topic for every seminar. Four papers in Urdu and four papers in Sindhi would be presented and discussed in each seminar.

The topic chosen were

-- The impact of the progressive literary movement on poetry in Sindh.

-- The impact of the progressive literary movement on short story/fiction in Sindh.

-- The impact of the progressive literary movement on literary criticism in Sindh.

-- And finally the impact of the progressive literary movement on the society of Sindh.

-- The first seminar was held at Umar Kot. The amended topic was: The tradition of the progressive literary movement in Sindh and its impact on poetry. Writers, poets and critics of both Urdu and Sindhi languages participated in the seminar in large number including from all parts of Sindh.

They include Muslim Shamim, Sattar Pirzado, Sarwar Javid, Ishaq Samijo, Dr Zulfiqar Sial, Akbar Leghari, Apa Mariam Majeedi, Professor Izhar Hayderi, Ali Sahil, Mir Mujahid Palli, Khtar Thebo, Asghar Baghi, Ashraf Pally, Zaibunnisa Zaibi, Nasir Sommro, Mohammad Baran, Mehrunnisa, Sahar Ali, Ayaz Umar Shaikh, Amin Lakho, Frah Sapna, Maula Bakhash Oambrani, Mohammad bin Ahmed, Dr Mohammad Shamim, Saleemuddin Shaikh, Aziz Mirza, Ali Ausat Jafri, Zulfiqar Gadhi, Sahib Raho, Faqir Mohammad Dhar, Haji Sagi, Haleem Baghi, Jamal Naqvi, Abbas Rizvi, Razia Apa Leghari and Sabuha Khan.

Mushera was the first part of the programme, arranged/organised by a local administration officer but an important critic of Sindhi literature Akbar Leghari with the co-operation of the local community. Mushaira was presided over by the prominent poet Mohammad Jumman Dar Ba Dar, Deputy Secretary General Anjaman Taraqqi Pasand Musanafeen, Pakistan. Rahat Saeed and Geneal Secretary Sindhi Adabi Sangat Yusuf Sihdhi were the guests of honour. It started with the recitation of Shaikh Ayaz's poetry. Poets, both Urdu and Sindhi, got a good response and appreciation.

March 28 was Sunday. The seminar was held at the Umar Kot fort. More than 200 enthusiasts attended. Muslim Shamim presided and Nazim Khatai and Parveen Hayder did the comparing.

In all, eight papers were presented by Sattar Pirzado, Mehrunnisa, Sarwar Javid, Ishaq Samijo, Zaibunnisa Zaibi, Dr Zulfiqar Sial, Apa Mariam Majeedi, and Muslim Shamim. The participants and audience were deeply involved in the threadbare discussion of the topic, so much so that extreme heat and hot winds failed to deter them.

It is equally interesting to note that, to the extent of holding the Mushaira, the same processes has started in Punjab. Recently a combined Mushaira was held in Multan, Serraiki, Punjabi and Urdu language poets participated and were appreciated by the large audience.

Although the process was low key and so far, not given much importance at the provincial and national level, for the governments is overwhelmed with multiple problems and the political parties have little concern with literary and cultural issues. Let the writers, poets, critics, artists and artistes combine their efforts and someday there would appear a multi-faceted but integrated national spiritual expose in the realm of art literature and culture.
