This is pretty old news, but I thought it was interesting. It looks
like netflix will not continue with the second round of their
collaborative filtering/learning algorithm development contest.
It has to do with how individual user identities can be predicted from
a comparison of the "anonymous" data to other data from places like
public profiles on IMDB.
Apparently, a lesbian was outed by her rating on brokeback mountain in
the netflix data set which she hadn't shared on the IMDB site, but the
other ones she had shared allowed her identity to be exposed in the
netflix prize data set.
Oh well. I guess the development of these algorithms on serious
scales will continue to remain behind the corporate veil instead of
crowdsourced.
