Sarbjit is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical drama film about Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1991 and then consequently spent 22 years in prison for alleged terrorism and spying.[1][2] Directed by Omung Kumar, the film stars Randeep Hooda as Sarabjit Singh.[3] Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Richa Chadda, and Darshan Kumar play pivotal roles.[4][5]

In 2012, after 22 years of imprisonment, Sarbjit's family is allowed to visit him in jail. They are heartbroken to witness him as a tortured prisoner but he rejoices in the short-lived reunion. Subsequently, his death sentence commutes to life in prison; having already served nearly twice the length of a standard Pakistani life sentence, it is assumed that he will be pardoned and released imminently. The Pakistani government soon clarifies that the release order they issued was not for Sarbjit, but for a prisoner named Surjeet, devastating Sarbjit's family. A year later, Sarbjit is attacked in his jail cell by Pakistani prisoners, and is admitted to a local hospital in critical condition, eventually succumbing to a comatose state. His sister, wife and grown daughters visit him but are forced to leave shortly before his death. Sarbjit's body is delivered to India, where his village and family mourn as they reminisce his life. As the film ends, Dalbir promises that she will always continue trying to fulfill his dying wish of being recognized as an innocent man.

It was reported that Sarabjit's daughters were also keen on Randeep Hooda playing the title role.[13] The actor had lost 18 kg in 28 days.[16] Richa Chadda was selected for the role of Sarbjit's wife. This is her second film opposite Hooda.[17] Darshan Kumar was cast as Pakistani lawyer who fights for Sarabjit in the film.[18] Ankur Bhatia was confirmed to play as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's husband in the film.[19]

The film locations included Punjab, Delhi and Mumbai.[20] Few crucial scenes was shot at the Wagah Border.[21] The director had created the by-lanes of Pakistan in Mumbai Bohri Mohallah, besides Punjab. The protagonist's house was recreated in Aarey Colony in the city though it could have been shot in Tarn Taran (Sarbjit Singh's hometown), the filmmaker reasoned that the town looks a little too modernized for the Punjab of 90s. Since Sarbjit's home was to be shown over a period of two decades, the set was changed accordingly.[22] It was reported on 18 March 2016 that the film shoot was halted for over four hours and producer (Zafar Mehdi) was arrested for hurting national sentiments while shooting a rally sequence with anti-Indian slogans in Urdu. The scene didn't go down well with the locals at Bhendi Bazaar and they filed a complaint against the makers. However Police officials has released Zafar Mehdi as they had valid permission to shoot for the film.[23]

The music for Sarbjit was composed by Jeet Gannguli, Amaal Mallik, Tanishk Bagchi, Shail-Pritesh and Shashi Shivam. The first song "Salamat" was released on 18 April 2016.[26] The music rights of the film were acquired by T-Series.

He started his Film career by appearing in the lead role in film Pind Di Kudi in 2004, with Sheeba Bhakri and Veena Malik. He then appeared in Apni Boli Apna Des in 2009. He worked in film Punjab Bolda in 2013, starring with Anisha Pooja, Gurchet Chitrakar, B.N Sharma, Binnu Dhillon, Karamjit Anmol, Amarjit Cheema. He also worked in Punjabi film named Haani with Harbhajan Mann, which was released in 2013. He also worked in a film named Ashke in 2018, starring with Amrinder Gill.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing the role of Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur in her upcoming film Sarbjit. If you are still grooving to Action Replay's song Chhan Ke Mohalla, then be ready for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to make you dance along with her in the Punjabi song Tuglak Tuglak Tun.

"While the seriousness has to be there, I am not making a boring film. I want people to cry, laugh and go through all the emotions. Twenty-three years is a long time. I do everything in films larger-than-life so even my way of showing Punjab will be bigger. This song is a full-on Punjabi dhamaal number," added Omung Kumar.

The song will be choreographed by Vishnu Deva, also known for his songs like Shahid Kapoor's Gandi Baat in R...Rajkumar and Priyanka Chopra's Ram Chahe Leela in the 2013 film Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela. The song will also feature Richa Chadha and Randeep Hooda doing bhangra along with Aishwarya.

Aishwarya will be seen in her de-glam avatar in this film. The film is based on Sarabjit Singh, an Indian farmer who was convicted of terrorism and spying in Pakistan and was sentenced to death. He was attacked by inmates at a prison in Lahore in April 2013 and died a few days later.

'Sarbjit is an irresponsibly sloppy film, a film so focused on artless emotional manipulation and trying to make the audience weep, that it trivialises an important true-life story,' says Raja Sen.

It tells us what the film's makers declare happened to the real Sarabjit Singh and his crusading sister Dalbir Kaur, what continues to happen today, and then, with much solemnity, it ends with a three-line quotation.

As it happens, the quote -- which I was too gobsmacked to write down, given the name that popped up under it -- belongs to none of these people, and is attributed instead to Omung Kumar, this film's director.

Instead of a film about a wrongfully imprisoned farmer, Kumar -- whose film stars Randeep Hooda in the title role -- appears intent to create the story of a true martyr, even though Sarabjit, once caught, didn't have much of a choice in the matter. Yet Kumar wants to give us The Passion Of The Hooda.

Richa Chadha, the best actor in the film, looks visibly pained by Rai -- and I don't just mean because she, as Sarbjit's wife, resents Sarbjit's sister. (The first time we see Chadha, she's literally shielding her child's ears from Rai's shrieks.) Chadha, however, doesn't age at all in the film, and, had Singh been in prison for another ten years, may well have ended up looking younger than her daughters.

Similarly Hooda, who overdoes tone, stays mostly consistent to this version of Sarbjit, and has a great scene where he finally meets his family through prison bars, and is overwhelmed by it all. This moment plays out strongly, but could have been so much more powerful without the cliched background music Kumar forces throughout every second of this melodramatic film.

Another sore point is the pointless song sequence that Omung Kumar kept peppering the movie with. In a movie with such sombre serious subject, music should have been relegated to background. In his bid to add punjabiyat in the form of peppy gidda and folk songs, the director made a terrible mistake.
