The Freitas & Merkle book, Kinematic Self-Replicating Machines, is out.
There's a copy in our office reading area, if you want to browse. Even
if you have read many of the 3278 references cited, you may find a few
new ones and the "synthesis" of them is interesting. The new "replicator
design space" (5.1.9) and safety discussions are worthy of some
reflection. A key set of topics (reproduction, autopoiesis and
complexity) "unfortunately lies beyond the scope of this book" (p. 4,
145, 157).
