Time distortion caused by specialised area of the brain?

I came across this recently, having had very pronounced time distortion effects caused by AIWS when in my teens

I've long believed that the rate of passage of time is controlled by the brain and that AIWS 'knocks' this area out of sync, almost like a computer losing its clock rate.
Makes me wonder how much of what we perceive is filtered and shaped by genetic factors.
