to Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Hello,

A learning specialist and psychologist by training, I am currently a Neuroscience student at the School of Advanced Education, Research and Accreditation, University Isabel I, and am conducting research on AIWS. I am hoping that my research may help raise awareness levels on AIWS and lead to increased advocacy efforts from researchers, health professionals and individuals with AIWS.

The procedure of my research pertains to any of the following: an anonymous reporting of experiences through the forum, an interview with me or a survey, linked in the consent letter that follows. It will take about 15 minutes to complete the research-related activity. I aim to be as less invasive as possible and all participants’ privacy and anonymity will be respected.

Best regards,

Sonata Sardinha

CONSENT LETTER:

March 10, 2022

Dear Participant,

This is a request for your involvement in a research project led by Sonata Sardinha, Clinical Psychologist and Learning Specialist, from the School of Advanced Education, Research and Accreditation, University Isabel I. The goal of this research is to learn more about the personal experiences lived by individuals with the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (AIWS).

This study is open to participants of all ages, provided that children under the age of 18 also obtain parental consent to participate. The procedures include an anonymous reporting of experiences through the forum, through an interview with the researcher or a survey. It will take about 15  minutes to complete the research-related activity.

Although there has been some limited research on potential neurological correlates, etiology and symptomatology of the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, few studies have delved into the differential childhood and adult-related experiences of individuals with AIWS. This research seeks to give a voice to individuals with the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. The findings of this research may help people with AIWS access resources and interventions earlier, through increased awareness levels and advocacy efforts from researchers, health professionals and affected individuals alike.

Psychological distress as a result of reading and responding to questions pertaining to Alice in Wonderland Syndrome experiences might be a possible risk of participation in this study. If you're in this situation, the following helpline can assist in getting the support you need:  https://www.mencap.org.uk/contact/contact_mencap_direct

Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time. Your responses will be kept fully confidential. If the results of this and follow-up studies are published, no individual responses will be disclosed, and any information you submit will remain anonymous.

You will not get any financial compensation for taking part in this unfunded study.

Your informed consent to participate in this research is constituted by completing the survey items linked below (please sign in with a gmail account).
