EXT. SANTA BARBARA - ROAD - DAY.
(SYDNEY and VAUGHN have just gotten into a car accident. The car is
next to a cornfield, in utter debris. The camera than pans into the
car, and we see that both SYDNEY and VAUGHN are unconscious and
scratched up.)
(SYDNEY awakens and looks at VAUGHN.)
SYDNEY: (whispers) Vaughn. Vaughn?
(She slips back into unconsciousness, and then ... )
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN is being taken away on the stretcher. SYDNEY is still on the
car, perplexed at the happenings.)
SYDNEY: Vaughn? Vau-
(One of the MEDICs opens up her door and kneels down.)
MEDIC: Don't worry, we're going to get you out of here.
SYDNEY: Is he okay?
MEDIC: You need to stay still, all right?
(The MEDIC prepares some sort of injection for her. SYDNEY notices.)
SYDNEY: I don't need anything. I'm fine.
(The MEDIC ignores her and continues to fill the syringe.)
SYDNEY: I don't need any of that.
(She hears a radio and then the MEDIC talking into it.)
MEDIC: The girl's alive. I'll take care of her.
RADIO: (audible) Copy. Four minutes out.
(SYDNEY suddenly gets suspicious. She notices that the MEDIC has a gun
in his back pocket, which pushes her suspiciousness even further. The
MEDIC goes to inject her with the syringe, but she blocks it and causes
him to inject himself with it.)
(The MEDIC gasps and falls over. SYDNEY gets out of the car and takes
off running. She heads for the ambulance, but then sees two other men
with guns preparing to shoot and she runs off towards the cornfield as
the fire repeated bullets at her.)
(SYDNEY scrambles frantically through the cornfield, both of the armed
men following after her. She comes to a stop after not hearing
anything, and walks cautiously. She runs into a flock of pigeons and
are startled as they chirp and fly upwards.)
(The men see the pigeons and yell. SYDNEY takes off running again, and
stops when she notices the helicopter. She sees one of the men with the
machine gun, and she disarms in with ease and then uses him to shield
herself from the other man's repeated fire.)
(The man SYDNEY used as a shield is killed, and she then uses the gun
she took from him to shoot the other man. She runs off to the edge of
the cornfield, and sees VAUGHN being rolled into the helicopter, which
then takes off.)
INT. LOS ANGELOS - EXAMINING ROOM - DAY.
(SYDNEY is talking to a DOCTOR.)
DOCTOR: We're going to run a few tests, just a precaution. But
everything appears to be normal.
SYDNEY: When can I go home?
DOCTOR: Soon. But you're going to have to take it easy.
SYDNEY: Of course.
(The DOCTOR leaves. SYDNEY slips on her engagement ring, when GORDON
DEAN enters the examining room. He holds up his ID as he speaks.)
DEAN: Miss Bristow. How're you feeling? Gordon Dean, Office of Special
Investigations.
SYDNEY: Any word on Vaughn?
DEAN: No, I'm afraid not. I hate to do this now, Agent Bristow, given
what you've been through.
SYDNEY: I already called in a report.
DEAN: Yes, I know. I just need you to clarify a few things, if that's
all right with you.
(She nods and he takes out a pen and a pad of paper.)
DEAN: In your report, you indicated that you two were going on
vacation. You didn't say where?
SYDNEY: Santa Barbara.
DEAN: And you were struck about half way there?
SYDNEY: About that. Yeah.
DEAN: What about before the accident? Did Agent Vaughn act anxious?
Perhaps, preoccupied?
SYDNEY: He seemed relaxed. We were taking a few days off.
(She notices that he's not doing anything.)
SYDNEY: You're not writing any of this down.
DEAN: You're not telling me anything worth writing.
SYDNEY: (shrugs) I'm telling you exactly what I remember. If that's not
enough ...
DEAN: (ignoring) You two are engaged. Isn't that correct?
SYDNEY: Yes.
DEAN: And you understand that marital privilege does not trump matters
of national security?
SYDNEY: Of course I do.
DEAN: I'm asking you to remember where your loyalty lies.
SYDNEY: (getting angry) My loyalty? My fiancé was just abducted-
DEAN: Perhaps. That's what we're trying to determine.
SYDNEY: (now angry) Wait a minute. What are you suggesting?
(JACK enters the room.)
JACK: Whatever information you need, my daughter will be happy to
cooperate. But she's just been through a traumatic experience. I'm sure
you can afford her some time?
DEAN: Of course, Director Bristow. (to SYDNEY) We'll talk again.
JACK: Thank you.
(GORDON DEAN leaves the room.)
SYDNEY: Dad.
JACK: Sydney, when your mother defected, I spent a year in prison
because the CIA assumed I collaborated with her. Before you say
anything that may implicate you, we need to go over your story.
SYDNEY: My story? Dad, what is going on?
JACK: Vaughn is currently under investigation. There have been a number
of rad flags raised by his conduct.
SYDNEY: What red flags?
JACK: Langly believes Vaughn may be a double agent. We think the crash
may have been an extraction.
(SYDNEY looks startled at this new information.)
INT. ROOM - DAY.
(VAUGHN sits in a chair at the table. A MAN enters.)
MAN: Been hearing about you for a long time.
(He sits at the table.)
MAN: It's nice to finally meet you, Mr. Michaux.
INT. TRAIN RIDE - DAY.
(SYDNEY is on a train, sketching a drawing. She enters the door marked
Authorized Personnel Only and pulls up a lever. She swipes her access
key and here enters APO.)
INT. APO - DAY.
(SYDNEY walks down the hallway.)
(She sees JACK and DEAN talking and stops.)
INT. ROOM - DAY.
(We return to the same room. VAUGHN is still sitting with the MAN.)
MAN: You've had a bad day.
VAUGHN: Where's Sydney?
MAN: In better shape than you. Your shoulder's dislocated. We'll take
care of that. I believe this was intended for you.
(He hands VAUGHN a package. VAUGHN stares at it.)
MAN: Oh, come on. Don't tell me you're not curious. Open it.
(VAUGHN does so and pulls out a tape recorder. He plays the music,
which turns out to be a bouncy, 1900s tune.)
VAUGHN: Catchy, but dated.
(He tosses the recorder onto the table.)
(The MAN picks it up and takes it apart. He takes out one of the
batteries and opens it up and pulls out a paper. He hands it to
VAUGHN.)
MAN: You mind telling me what this says?
(VAUGHN unravels it and it turns out to be a series of numbers.)
VAUGHN: Five, seven, three, eight, four-
MAN: We know what this is about. We know who sent it. What we don't
know is where's Lehman.
VAUGHN: Who?
MAN: You must be in a lot of pain. Maybe that's why your memory is a
bit fuzzy. Why don't we help Mr. Michaux out?
(One of the GUARDs twists VAUGHN's dislocated shoulder. VAUGHN screams
out in pain.)
INT. APO - DAY.
(WEISS is at his desk talking on the phone.)
WEISS: Okay, but it flew somewhere. Those helicopters are stealth,
they're not invisible. (pauses) Then restack the satellites! Call me
back with something.
(SYDNEY comes up to him.)
SYDNEY: Any word yet?
WEISS: No, but there is a guy here from Langley and he's been-
SYDNEY: I know. Why was Vaughn assigned to be my handler?
WEISS: What do you mean?
SYDNEY: Six years ago, when I walked into that CIA office; why was
Vaughn assigned to my case?
WEISS: I don't know. He asked for it. You came in and you were all
screwed up. You had that freaky red hair. He likes a challenge. Hold
on. You're not actually considering this, are you? Syd, the idea that
he's disloyal. That's insane.
SYDNEY: Yeah.
INT. ROOM - DAY.
(VAUGHN has his face pressed against the table.)
MAN: Just tell us what we want to know. I'm tired of playing games.
VAUGHN: Quitter.
MAN: Are you really going to hold out until we kill you? I guess I can
respect that. It seems Mr. Michaux needs a little incentive. Go down
the hall way to his fiancé. Bring her in. Just her finger.
VAUGHN: Leave her out of this!
MAN: And that's up to you, isn't it? The one with the ring.
(The GUARD holding VAUGHN turns and starts to leave.)
MAN: Kind of poetic, don't you think?
VAUGHN: Stop. The message. It's in code. I need a pencil.
INT. APO - DAY.
(MARSHALL is at the computer, typing. GORDON DEAN looks on.)
DEAN: Can you speed it up, Agent Blinkman?
MARSHALL: Flinkman! WIth an F sound! Not that hard really. Look, I know
you wanted me to access Agent Vaughn's personal files, but I'm telling
you you're not going to find anything.
DEAN: No one is judging Agent Vaughn.
MARSHALL: If he was up to something, I'd know about it. We're friends.
We do lunch.
DEAN: How much longer?
CUT TO:
(SYDNEY is at her desk, scanning the face she was sketching earlier
against a database of identities. DIXON comes up to her.)
DIXON: Hey.
SYDNEY: Hey.
DIXON: How're you holding up?
SYDNEY: What if I was wrong about him?
DIXON: Sydney. You remember when we were working at SD-6? That night on
the pier? I caught you breaking into a secure facility. You asked me to
trust you but I didn't. The proof was right in front of me. You were a
traitor. If I had to do it over again, I'd give you the benefit of the
doubt.
(SYDNEY smiles faintly at this.)
INT. ROOM - DAY.
(VAUGHN is sitting there blankly. The MAN stares at him.)
MAN: Is there a problem?
VAUGHN: I can't write. Would you mind setting my shoulder?
(The MAN does. VAUGHN yells, pauses, and then sends a blow at the MAN,
sending him backwards. The other GUARD acts up and charges VAUGHN, who
easily takes him down.)
(VAUGHN takes a pencil and holds it up against the GUARDs eye.)
VAUGHN: Where's Sydney? Where is she?! Answer me!
GUARD: She escaped.
(Frustrated, VAUGHN knocks him down.)
(Two other guards hear the commotion and run in, only to find a
swinging flap to the vent through the ceiling.)
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN is running. He jumps out a window and falls into a garbage
dumpster and gets out. He continues running down a hallway.)
INT. APO - DAY.
(SYDNEY's cell phone rings.)
SYDNEY: Hello?
CUT TO VAUGHN:
VAUGHN: Sydney, are you okay?
CUT TO SYDNEY:
SYDNEY: Thank god. I'm fine. Hang on.
(She starts rushing towards the bathroom, not noticing the DEAN
watching her run out in a hurry.)
SYDNEY: Are you okay?
CUT TO VAUGHN:
VAUGHN: I'm fine.
SYDNEY: Where are you?
VAUGHN: Look, I know you have questions.
CUT TO SYDNEY:
SYDNEY: About a million of them.
VAUGHN: I'll tell you everything as soon as I can ...
CUT TO VAUGHN:
VAUGHN: ... but Sydney, no one else can know you're talking to me. I
need my father's watch. You need to get it for me. Do you remember the
dead drop we used to contact Esina - the lockers?
SYDNEY: Of course I do.
VAUGHN: Syd, please. I need you to do this for me.
SYDNEY: Let me think about it.
(She leaves the restroom, startled to find JACK and DEAN.)
DEAN: Where is he?
SYDNEY: I don't know what you're talking about.
DEAN: By with holding information, you're only implicating yourself.
I'll give you one more chance.
JACK: Sydney, I understand your inclination is to protect Vaughn at any
costs. But assume you're right - that this wasn't an extraction, but
Vaughn was abducted. And even if he's escaped, he's still in a
tremendous amount of danger. If you really want to protect him, let us
bring him in safely.
SYDNEY: He's in Mexico City.
EXT. MEXICO CITY - BUILDING - DAY.
(Cars encircle and surround the building. GORDON DEAN and various other
agents get out, armed. In another building, VAUGHN opens up the locker,
but it's empty. The agents set an explosive at the garage door of the
building, and it goes off.)
(The door is blown up, but the agents find nothing.)
(In a seperate building, SYDNEY comes out of the darkness holding a
watch.)
SYDNEY: Looking for this?
(VAUGHN turns and sees her.)
SYDNEY: I want the truth. Start with your name.
VAUGHN: Andre Michaux. I'll tell you the rest on the way.
INT. BUILDING - HALLWAY.
(SYDNEY and VAUGHN are in a conversation.)
VAUGHN: Seven years ago, a woman came to me. She said that her father
had been involved in a project. Something people had gone to great
lengths to cover up. She said my father was part of it. Said it was
called Prophet Five.
SYDNEY: Your father was an agent?
VAUGHN: Before he joined the CIA. She said his name was Michaux, and
that he was a mathematician.
(SYDNEY and VAUGHN enter an elevator.)
VAUGHN: The day you walked into CIA, you described a mission to secure
a device made by a man named Mueller - the same man I was told had
originated the Prophet Five project. Now, this was my first proof that
this woman's story was true. But whatever it was, my father was running
away from it. He changed his identity; he changed mine. I was eighteen
months old at the time. The man we're meeting - James Lehman -
Renee and I have been trying to find him for years. We believe he
worked with our fathers.
SYDNEY: Renee who? Who is this woman?
VAUGHN: Renee Riene.
SYDNEY: (shocked) Vaughn.
(The elevator stops and fumbles. It starts again and stops at a certain
floor. The door opens and LEHMAN immediately shines a flashlight in
VAUGHN's face.)
LEHMAN: The watch. Show it to me.
(VAUGHN holds it up, and LEHMAN then turns off the flashlight. He
notices SYDNEY.)
LEHMAN: You were supposed to come alone.
VAUGHN: Whatever you to say to me, she can hear.
LEHMAN: Follow me.
INT. APO - DAY.
(JACK and DEAN are talking.)
DEAN: I was prepared to bring Agent Vaughn in for questioning.
JACK: You think I know where he is?
DEAN: Oh, I think it's possible. Yes. Your daughter, too?
JACK: I don't.
DEAN: Then I have no choice. I am now officially classifying him a
fugitive and your daughter an accomplice. Now, if you want me to show
her any leniance, find her and tell me where she is.
JACK: Maybe you should try Mexico City.
DEAN: You'll be notified when they've been apprehended.
(He leaves. MARSHALL briefly greets DEAN and then turns to JACK.)
JACK: What is it, Marshall?
MARSHALL: He's not going to find Sydney and Vaughn. Not from what I
gave him. I encrypted Vaughn's files with four thousand ninety six bit.
It'll take him years. I mean, he's an ass. Deal with it.
JACK: You still have the originals?
(MARSHALL nods.)
MARSHALL: Get them for me.
INT. BUILDING - DAY.
(LEHMAN, VAUGHN, and SYDNEY are there.)
LEHMAN: Before I start, you should know your father did everything he
could to protect you from this.
VAUGHN: Mr. Lehman, I want to know about Prophet Five.
LEHMAN: I was a cryptologist. A specialist in patterns working for the
Pentagon. In 1972, a private foundation recruited me, along with
others. Scientists, linguists, the best and the brightest. That's where
I met your father.
VAUGHN: What was the objective?
LEHMAN: We were given one page of the book. The Prophecta Chinque; the
fifth prophet. The fifteenth century text that supposedly had been
written in an unbreakable code.
SYDNEY: They wanted you to break the code. Were you successful?
LEHMAN: After years, yes. It referred to proteins, amino acids,
nucleotides. It seemed to be some sort of advanced genetics five
hundred years ahead of its time. Just a few days after we turned in our
report, your father contacted me. He told me what was happening to
others. Accidents, car crashes, fires, heart attacks, strokes - all
people who were involved with the project. So, I followed your father's
advice. Changed my name, and I disappeared.
VAUGHN: What's changed now. Why did you contact us
LEHMAN: Over the years, I've developed sources - leads to where the
book might be stored. But all my attempts at recovery failed.
VAUGHN: I'll contact you when I have the book.
(SYDNEY and VAUGHN arrive under aliases. SYDNEY wears a blonde wig.)
BOUNCER: Your invitation, please.
SYDNEY: Le miel, montret l'homme.
(Honey, show the man.)
VAUGHN: Vous ne l'avez pas apporté ?
(You didn't bring it?)
SYDNEY: Vous avez été supposé à-
(You were supposed to-)
VAUGHN: Non, je vous ai spécifiquement demandé-
(No, I specifically asked you-)
SYDNEY: Non, quand j'étais prêt, vous avez demandé s'I-
(No, when I was getting ready, you asked if-)
VAUGHN: J'ai demandé si vous aviez la pièce dans votre bourse.
(I asked if you had room in your purse.)
(SYDNEY chuckles a little, her alias realizing the mistake.)
SYDNEY: (resuming English) My husband is right. It is my fault.
BOUNCER: Go ahead.
SYDNEY: Merci.
(The two walk forward. They fill one of the champagne glasses with a
liquid of some sort. VAUGHN distracts one of the servers while SYDNEY
exchanges the altered drink with another one. The waiter goes outside
and a man takes the drink that SYDNEY exchanged.)
(SYDNEY and VAUGHN follow and begin dancing.)
SYDNEY: (giggling) You're waltzing!
VAUGHN: Yup. I've been practicing for our wedding.
SYDNEY: With whom?
VAUGHN: Weiss.
(SYDNEY laughs. Suddenly, the man who took the altered champagne glass
collapses as the liquid SYDNEY injected into the drink takes effect.
Using the distraction, VAUGHN enters an office.)
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN opens a shelf, revealing a safe.)
CUT TO:
(SYDNEY is at the junction box calling VAUGHN.)
SYDNEY: Hey, I found the junction box.
VAUGHN: Ready when you are.
SYDNEY: It's been customized. Hang on, I'll call you right back.
(She hangs up and calls DIXON.)
SYDNEY: Remember what you said? If you had to do it over again?
DIXON: What do you need?
SYDNEY: Service records. Pan global security. Serial number one, six,
one, five, four, one, three, one.
(DIXON enters and searches for the serial number for pan global
security through some sort of command prompt.)
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN is waiting in the office when a young, attractive blonde woman
enters carrying a bottle of champagne. She sees VAUGHN.)
VAUGHN: Just admiring the collection.
WOMAN: It's pretty gruesome if you ask me. Dad's really into guns. I
think he's overcompensating. You're Walter, aren't you?
VAUGHN: What gave me away?
WOMAN: He's always going on about the new guy at work.
(She steps closer to VAUGHN, taking a sip of champagne.)
VAUGHN: (referring to the champagne) Aren't you a little young?
WOMAN: I'm a little young to be stuck at this snore fest.
CUT TO:
(DIXON and SYDNEY on the phone.)
DIXON: Looks like the safe's been rerouted through the central alarm
system. You need to repatch. Do you see a purple wire?
SYDNEY: Yes, I do.
DIXON: Cut it.
SYDNEY: Got it.
DIXON: Okay, tie it to the last terminal.
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN and the WOMAN.)
WOMAN: My dad's threatened by you, you know?
VAUGHN: I very much doubt that.
WOMAN: Seriously, he's so lame. But you're young, smart, cute. You
know, this party would be a lot more fun if we were naked.
VAUGHN: That's not going to happen.
CUT TO:
(SYDNEY and DIXON on the phone.)
SYDNEY: Done.
DIXON: Now, Syd, you just need to reset the system and wait.
(SYDNEY presses a button, presumably the reset option, and waits.)
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN and the WOMAN.)
VAUGHN: you know, there are better ways to get back at your father.
WOMAN: But none involve me and you.
(She leans forward and whispers into VAUGHN's ear. VAUGHN steps away.)
VAUGHN: Whoa. Okay. Hey, you need to leave now, or Daddy's going to
find out what his little girl's really like.
WOMAN: Jerk.
(She leaves.)
CUT TO:
(SYDNEY and DIXON.)
SYDNEY: Oh. Dixon, thank you.
DIXON: Be safe.
(The two disconnect their lines.)
CUT TO:
(VAUGHN in the office. He opens up the safe and pulls out the book. He
flips through the pages, when suddenly, the WOMAN enters and speaks
before noticing what he's doing.)
WOMAN: Oh, and Walter ... guess you're getting fired.
(Seeing what VAUGHN is doing, she presses the alarm button.)
(The alarm starts blaring loudly, and SYDNEY and VAUGHN start running
out of the hotel. SYDNEY's cell phone rings and she answers, thinking
that it's VAUGHN.)
SYDNEY: I'm heading to the extraction point.
DOCTOR PARK: Sydney? This is Doctor Park. Your test results are in.
SYDNEY: Now really isn't the best time.
DOCTOR PARK: You're going to want to hear this.
(SYDNEY reaches the cliff, presumably the extraction point. VAUGHN runs
behind her, pulling his jacket off revealing a parachute. He starts
preparing the parachute. SYDNEY closes her phone, stunned.)
VAUGHN: We have to go.
SYDNEY: The doctor called. (pauses) I'm pregnant.
VAUGHN: What?
(They are both stunned, when suddenly there are shouts and sounds of
bullets being fired. The two come back to reality and immediately jump
off the cliff.)
INT. CIA PRISON - CELL.
(SLOANE is looking through papers. JACK comes up to his cell.)
JACK: Arvin.
SLOANE: Nadia. How is she?
JACK: There's been no change.
SLOANE: I have to get out of here, Jack. IF they're not prepared to
charge me with a crime, you have to do something.
JACK: I am trying to expedite your release.
SLOANE: (frustrated) It's not enough. My daughter is being kept in a
coma. A coma, Jack. She is suffering from a condition which no one
understands. It is a condition that I am responsible for, with no hope
for a cure. I can't help my daughter sitting in a cell, combing thorugh
obscure medical journals.
JACK: I know.
SLOANE: I'm sorry, Jack. I ... you didn't come here for that. What is
it?
JACK: Are you aware of the off-book trips Vaughn took to Marseilles?
Three over the last twelve months. They occured while you were head of
APO.
SLOANE: If you're looking to find out if I'd tasked him, then no. Tell
me what this is about.
(JACK slips SLOANE a file. SLOANE reads it.)
SLOANE: Serbia, two years ago. Istanbul, 2001. Are you familiar with
Convalt?
JACK: The raven - Renee Riene.
SLOANE: That's right. She's wanted for the assassination of the Turkish
interior minister in 2001, and for her murders of three CIA agents
stationed in Serbia.
JACK: Vaughn's movements track with hers.
SLOANE: Does Sydney know about this?
(JACK's silence answers the question. SLOANE hands him the file.)
SLOANE: Tell her, Jack.
INT. APO - DAY.
(DEAN goes up to RACHEL working on a computer.)
DEAN: Tell me you have something.
RACHEL: Four thousand ninety six bits. Not bad. But whoever screwed
with these files used a modified version of DOD's encryption for them.
I hacked into NSA's network and pulled the decryption key.
DEAN: What did you find?
RACHEL: Your fugitive used a handful of documented alias's - one of
which passed through Italian customs last night.
DEAN: You're a genius.
(RACHEL turns around.)
RACHEL: Yeah, I know.
EXT. TRAIN TRACKS - DAY.
(VAUGHN and SYDNEY drive into a parking lot near a set of train
tracks.)
SYDNEY: He said nine. We're early.
(There's an awkward silence.)
SYDNEY: Are we just going to sit here and not talk about the thing
we're both thinking about? Where are you with this, Vaughn? I just need
to know how you feel. Is it something you want?
VAUGHN: The truth?
SYDNEY: Of course.
VAUGHN: What we do - the things we see everyday. Honestly, no. I
didn't think this was what I wanted. I mean, bringing a baby into this
world? That is so messed up. I just assumed th-that I'd wait. That we'd
wait.
SYDNEY: For?
VAUGHN: For things to be safe, or at least safer.
SYDNEY: Yeah. I get it.
(She looks down, looking crushed at his response.)
VAUGHN: But looking at you, all I can think about is what our kid is
goign to be like. I'm not worried about the world. I just ... I can't
wait to meet thi-this new little person.
(SYDNEY's expression instantly lights up ecstatically.)
SYDNEY: Really? I mean it's pretty great, right?
VAUGHN: You're going to be an amazing mom, and I'm going to be a
disaster. I've never changed a diaper.
SYDNEY: Neither have I! We're going to have to call Marshall to assist.
(They both start laughing.)
VAUGHN: Oh, god.
(They laugh more, and then they see LEHMAN.)
SYDNEY: He's here. You should go.
VAUGHN: Be right back.
(He kisses her.)
VAUGHN: Start thinking of names.
(He gets out of the car and crosses the tracks to meet LEHMAN. He gives
him the book that SYDNEY and VAUGHN captured earlier.)
VAUGHN: Can you decode it?
LEHMAN: It'll take a while. When I'm done, I'll contact you. From now
on, do not initiate contact with me.
(A car suddenly drives up behind them. SYDNEY is alarmed at this and
looks up. DEAN gets out of the car as two more cars drive up. SYDNEY
immediately gets out of her car and rushes towards them, but is stopped
as a train starts passing, thus, going in between her and VAUGHN.)
(LEHMAN attempts to run, but DEAN shoots him.)
(The MAN that was interrogating VAUGHN in the beginning gets out of one
of the cars. He shoots LEHMAN repeatedly. He then turns and starts
shooting VAUGHN in the chest repeatedly. SYDNEY is heart broken, not
being able to stop or do anything.)
(VAUGHN collapses and looks up, but is shot again and again in the
chest.)
(DEAN leans down and takes the book from LEHMAN. DEAN and the MAN get
in their cars, and all the cars drive away. The train finishes passing
and SYDNEY frantically runs over to VAUGHN, who is still barely
breathing.)
INT. LOS ANGELOS - DOCTOR'S ROOM - DAY.
(VAUGHN is in surgery. Doctors stand over him. SYDNEY is sitting
outside the room, watching. JACK enters and SYDNEY goes up to him.)
SYDNEY: He's still in surgery. No one's come out and told me anything.
JACK: I hope you understand what you've done.
SYDNEY: What?
JACK: Your heroic efforts to help Vaughn were short sighted. You acted
impetuously without the benefit of the facts.
SYDNEY: You don't know what you're talking-
JACK: Sydney. Vaughn is not the person you think he is. He's been
working with a known criminal.
SYDNEY: Renee Riene. I know.
JACK: Then what on earth prompted you to risk your own life, not to
mention your professional integrity?
SYDNEY: Dad. Vaughn and I - we're having a baby. There's an
explanation for all of this, if you'll let me tell you.
(A DOCTOR comes out.)
SYDNEY: Is he out of surgery?
DOCTOR: He's in recovery now. But the organ damage sustained is
significant, so our expectation is that we'll stop the bleeding ... but
we'll know more in the next twenty four hours.
SYDNEY: I need to see him.
DOCTOR: You can wait in his room until he wakes up.
(DOCTOR leaves.)
JACK: Sydney, I'll do everything I can to help you both.
(SYDNEY leaves. JACK's phone rings. He answers it.)
JACK: Yes?
DIXON: I just spoke with Director Chase. According to her, Dean wasn't
in special investigations. Went off the grid two years ago.
JACK: Status?
DIXON: He was presumed dead.
INT. LOS ANGELOS - VAUGHN'S ROOM - DAY.
(SYDNEY is here. She rubs his forehead. JACK enters.)
JACK: Hi. Gordan Dean is a ghost. Well placed and well connected.
SYDNEY: What are we going to do?
INT. APO - DAY.
(WEISS is carrying a paper. MARSHALL joins him.)
MARSHALL: Hey, I just broke about thirty federal laws. If I get caught,
I'll be sharing a cell with a guy named Bruno.
WEISS: That's white collared. More like Martha Stewart.
(They meet up with DIXON.)
DIXON: I've contacted our Italian friend. He's got the passports. He'll
coordinate transports as soon as Vaughn is stable. What's the outlook?
JACK: (on phone) Sometime in the next twenty four to fourty eight
hours, we hope. Weiss, are you there?
WEISS: Yeah, I got the blueprints to the Cape Town building. They are
right in front of me. We'll have no problem getting in, but we will
need two teams.
JACK: Give my full authorization. What about Pentagon records?
MARSHALL: Well, I've already cross referenced the 1972 archives for the
name Prophet Five. So far, no luck.
JACK: Keep looking. Go back at least ten years. Someone might have
slipped.
(He disconnects and turns and sees SYDNEY and VAUGHN through the
window.)
INT. LOS ANGELOS - VAUGHN'S ROOM - DAY.
(VAUGHN is awake. SYDNEY and VAUGHN are talking.)
SYDNEY: I always liked the name Owen.
(She gives him a drink.)
VAUGHN: Owen. Sounds like something you name a gerbil.
SYDNEY: Clementine is cute.
VAUGHN: For a fruit.
SYDNEY: It's also a name.
VAUGHN: It's also a campfire song.
SYDNEY: Okay, you don't like that one. What about Isabel?
VAUGHN: Isabel Vaughn. Isabel Bristow Vaughn.
SYDNEY: That's pretty.
(Tears start to well up in her eyes.)
SYDNEY: I like that.
VAUGHN: Me too. Sorry, Syd, I'm getting so tired.
SYDNEY: Close your eyes. I'll be right here.
VAUGHN: Syd, I love you.
SYDNEY: I love you, too.
(She kisses him, then on the forehead.)
(She walks over to the window, when suddenly, the machines connected to
VAUGHN begin to beep frantically. VAUGHN is flat lining. The machine
flashes that his heart is failing. Doctors rush in and SYDNEY is taken
out of the room, where she watches.
(The doctors try to revive him, but to no avail. They begin to use
paddles and to clear, which causes SYDNEY to cry seeing her fiancé in
a state as such. Her hand goes over her mouth and she's crying.)
CUT TO:
(SYDNEY is sitting by the bed, holding on VAUGHN's hand, looking upset.
Doctors come in and cover his face with a blanket. JACK watches as they
wheel VAUGHN out of the room. SYDNEY and JACK share a look.)
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET BY SARAH MCLACHLAN begins to play.

(SYDNEY is next to JACK.)
CUT TO:
(Two members of the congregation open the doors.)
(The pastor walks out, followed by DIXON, MARSHALL, WEISS, JACK, and
two other agents carrying VAUGHN's coffin. SYDNEY walks behind, looking
distressed as she watches. The coffin is put away.)
(JACK turns back and looks at her. SYDNEY watches sadly.)
4 MONTHS LATER
INT. LONDON - NIGHT.
The remix of DIRTY LITTLE SECRET BY SARAH MCLACHLAN begins playing.
(SYDNEY walks up, under an alias. She sits at a stool.)
RENEE: Can I help you?
SYDNEY: You're a hard person to find. But if I can do it, so can they.
RENEE: Sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about.
SYDNEY: I know who you are, Renee. We need to talk.
RENEE: We have nothing to talk about.
(RENEE reaches for a gun.)
SYDNEY: It's about Michael Vaughn.
(RENEE stops and stares at SYDNEY.)
RENEE: You're Sydney.
SYDNEY: Yeah.
RENEE: How did you find me?
SYDNEY: I know everything.
RENEE: Then you should have walked away.
SYDNEY: You don't know me very well.
(And then we ... )
