This weekend was Frankie Manning's 95th birthday celebration. Seeing
Chazz and Judy and saying "I am so sorry for your loss" doesn't really
convey how deeply I feel that nor how close I felt to him.
I met Frankie in late 1992. Over the following 9 months he gave me
private lessons and taught me to carry Lindy in my heart, mostly
because of him. Later when I came back to Detroit he was gracious
enough to come here in 1996 to help me start people doing Lindy in the
Great Lakes. And came back twice a year for more than 5 years.
He told me on more than one occasion that he would die if he ever
stopped dancing. I think the last few months of his life when he was
dealing withthe hip replacement and subsequent pace maker took the
wind out of his sails and off the dance floor. He was a man who stayed
in my home, who I cooked for even though I barely cook for myself
these days and who sent me postcards from around the world. I will
always think of Frankie Manning as my dance father.
