Title: Language Design for Cognitive Agents and Artificial Intelligence

Abstract: Currently, no language exists that provides programmers with integral support for programming autonomous decision systems. In AI, sophisticated algorithms for automated planning, reasoning with knowledge, decision making, and/or learning have been developed. But using these algorithms and integrating them into an intelligent system is a challenging engineering task. I will explore the idea of using a novel abstraction mechanism of cognitive modules that encapsulate AI algorithms as the main building block of a new programming language for AI. We argue that this approach where complex AI algorithms of today become the basic programming abstractions of tomorrow can address the AI engineering challenge. Moreover, such abstraction mechanisms also can provide a basis for verifying the reliability of autonomous decision systems.
