The "First Day of School" is actually a packet that I've put together
which is part reteaching and part reference book.
I've chosen to teach Statistics and Probability first for 2 reasons.
The first is that my school pays large gobs of money to have our
students take the ERB (Educational Research Battery) every Fall which
is an achievement test of sorts. We get individual student data back
and have to create individual plans for any student that shows
weakness in any of the core areas.
The second reason I teach Prob and Stats up front is to build in time
to work with basic graphing, operations with rational numbers, and
vocab. I use Prob and Stats as a tool to teach other concepts (whilst
I'm teaching those curricular objectives as well).
I hope this helps anyone interested in having a peek. I'd love to see
other school's approaches to getting the "green dot" and getting
Algebra 1 taught to 8th graders!!!
