Hi Ejike -

As you are probably aware, many things are possible with Alfresco, it just depends on what you want to do. If you could please describe a bit more of what your client's requirements are, we could be more helpful. Does your client want to store chat discussions as content or do they want to have discussions about content that is in a repo? What version of Alfresco are you using?

Alfresco Share has a threaded discussion capability built into it - you might want to check into it. See the documentation for that here: https://docs.alfresco.com/5.1/concepts/discussions-intro.html

You could also build your own custom chat capability in a number of different ways. You might check into what is available as a component building block here: https://www.alfresco.com/abn/adf/ or here: https://hub.alfresco.com/t5/alfresco-content-services-hub/aikau-framework/ba-p/290218

I hope this is a helpful start - please let us know more about what you need to do!

Yours,
Kevin Dorr

Hi Kevin,

Thanks so much for your response.

The Client wants a real-time online chat feature, so that anyone can chat with other users on the application who are online at any point in time while using Alfresco.

In the event they need to understand some documents and do not want to walk down to someones table or office, they can simply chat with the person on the Alfresco chat feature.

I hope this explain the scenerio clearly.

BR,

Hi Ejike -

If your users are using Share, have a look at the threaded discussion capability that I mentioned earlier and see if that might fit their needs.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the response and yes my users are using share but the threaded discussion capability does not allow for online real-time chat.

They are asking for something similar to LYNC being used by Office365, that shows you when users are online and who you can chat with.

I hope you understand my point.

Is there something similar to that in Alfresco, I know they used to have something similar to that in early Alfresco versions.

Alfresco does not have real-time online chat out-of-the-box. And that's something you probably don't want to write yourself. So, why not use an open source chat server and then integrate that with Alfresco. For something like this, you might take a look at Openfire, which is a Jabber-based, open source real-time chat server with a variety of clients, see https://igniterealtime.org/

I believe some folks in the Alfresco community did an integration a long time ago but it is probably very old at this point. You might look around for "Alfresco jabber integration" or similar.

Jeff

Hi Everyone,

Just a reminder, please I need someone who can integrate an online realtime chat module to Alfresco community, similar to LYNC in office365.

We would definitely be looking at paying for such services/solution.

Thanks and BR,

Ejike
