Hello Green Team,
I hope everyone is having a lovely (and not too hot) summer!
I wanted to share some information I received recently through the Alfred Sustainability Working Group about a proposal to increase the amount of waste that Hyland landfill in Angelica is able to accept (from 1,200 tons per day to 1,790 tons per day on average). The landfill, which is managed by Casella, is one of five in NY State permitted to accept tailings and other waste from fracking operations. The Sierra Club, Concerned Citizens of Allegany County (CCAC) and others are raising concerns that this waste can be quite radioactive and that leachate from the landfill is currently treated by the Wellsville waste water treatment plant, which isn’t equipped to deal with radiation and thus discharges any radioactivity into the Genesee River. They believe that increasing the flow of material into the landfill will exacerbate this problem. More detailed information about the proposal is posted at https://newyork2.sierraclub.org/content/comment-hyland-landfill-applications, http://www.garyabraham.com/Hyland.html, http://treichlerlawoffice.com/waste/hyland/index.html, and http://www.dec.ny.gov/enb/20130508_reg9.html#902320000300002 .
The DEC has tentatively approved the increase but is accepting public comment on the matter until July 21, 2013. If you are so inclined, you can submit comments to by email to r9...@gw.dec.state.ny.us.

Julian,
It’s my understanding that the Angelica Landfill is nearing capacity and will be closing (sealed off) for good in another few years. Why would they want to increase the amount of matter going into the landfill if they don’t have a plan to replace it?
A questions worth posting to the County Legislators before this is approved.

Marlee,
The Hyland landfill is the one owned by Casella and not the county landfill. Though, as you pointed out, soon the county landfill will close and Hyland will be the only place for trash in Allegany county.
