Hi all,

As you can see in the attached, SUNY is offering small grants of up to $7500 for sustainability related projects.  Projects need to have at least one faculty principal investigator and involve students in some way.  Proposals are due by 12/15 at the latest.

To give you a sense of the kinds of projects they are looking for, here are the projects that were funded last year:

·         a pilot study in energy storage systems in form of compressed air

·         the development of a code-compliant campus biodiesel production system

·         a pilot study to assess the feasibility of non-experts using basic field techniques to identify urban garden areas with a potential for soil heavy metal crop contamination

·         the collection of New York state climate data

·         a series of collaborative projects between SUNY Oswego, Oswego City School District, and the Oswego City community

·         the integration of renewable energy into an engineering design course

·         the development of Solar Decathlon entry

As you can see, they appear to be willing to fund a variety of things, including the implementation of campus sustainability projects, the integration of sustainability into the curriculum, and more academic research projects.

Please let me know if you have an idea for a potential project. Assuming it fits well with my objectives, I can probably do a good amount of the work to pull together the application.

Thanks!

Julian

Subject: Second Annual Small Grant Sustainability Fund

Good morning,

The SUNY Office of Sustainability and The Research Foundation for SUNY are pleased to announce the release of the second annual funding opportunity entitled: “THE SUSTAINABILITY FUND - GRANTS FOR IDEAS THAT MIGHT FURTHER THE POWER OF SUNY”.   One of the goals of the SUNY Office of Sustainability is to help our campuses think innovatively and strategically about energy usage in the myriad ways it manifests itself.  This funding mechanism is a great opportunity to conduct some preliminary work that could lead to a larger submission to an external funding agency.  Pursuant to the attached RFP, proposals should not exceed $7,500 and there is a rolling deadline of 11/1/13-12/15/13.  Awards are anticipated to be made by March 1, 2014 and funds must be spent on individual projects by November 1, 2014.  Attached you will also find an excel budget form containing built-in formulas to ease budget creation.  You will notice in the RFP that there is a 50% match requirement.  Should you have any questions, please contact Deborah Howard, Director of Sustainability for SUNY at (518) 320-1489 or via e-mail at Deborah...@suny.edu.

Best,

Garry
