Hello,

Despite my naive experience with software containers or deploying apps, I was finally able to deploy Alfio on Heroku. Very exciting indeed!

However, I am currently stuck at the very first step in configuring alfio settings. Take a look at the attached screenshot, and please explain to me what does every step mean. The only step I understood was choosing the language. The rest I have no idea.

More specifically:
1. What is the "Base application url"? Should I enter the url where it's currently deployed on Heroku or what?
2. What are the E-Mail settings for? Notifications? Registrants? What does it mean by "How many e-mail should be managed within 5 sec.? What is the Reply-to address for? Is it when people receive an email confirmation of registration, they reply to that email?
3. What does "Google Maps" have to do here? I tried to create a Google maps' client api key but during the process it sounded like this is not free? Am I expected to pay for api key, or is it generally free?

Sorry I asked you tons of questions. Hopefully, these are questions that you can answer easily.

Thank you!

Hi Zaher,

> 1. What is the "Base application url"? Should I enter the url where it's currently deployed on Heroku or what?

Correct, this is the public URL where Alf.io is installed, like https://<yourappname>.herokuapps.com
Alf.io will use this URL when generating links to the ticketing system, for example in the confirmation email.

> 2. What are the E-Mail settings for? Notifications? Registrants?

Your customers/attendees will receive a confirmation email when they complete the reservation, as well as other notifications you may want to send.
Therefore you need an e-mail service in order to send emails out.
"Disabled" means that no emails are sent and it is the recommended option when you are in testing phase.
Once you go live you should have a real email service linked (SMTP, Mailgun, Mailjet)

What does it mean by "How many e-mail should be managed within 5 sec.?

It is an advanced option, do not worry about that

> What is the Reply-to address for? Is it when people receive an email confirmation of registration, they reply to that email?

Correct.
By default Alf.io uses the Organiser email address for this purpose. If you want to override this configuration you can use this field to do it.

> 3. What does "Google Maps" have to do here? I tried to create a Google maps' client api key but during the process it sounded like this is not free? Am I expected to pay for api key, or is it generally free?

Google Maps provides a free tier, please check their documentation.
Here you can find the APIs you have to enable: https://github.com/alfio-event/alf.io/issues/372

We're trying to make alf.io more "user friendly" for people who are not already familiar with operating an application on the internet.
But we need help for that: Alf.io is - still - a side project for us, and we're very busy with the implementation of new features.
Therefore some external contributions for creating a complete "first steps with alf.io" guide (like https://alf.io/tutorials/check-in/) would be really appreciated.
The guide should contain all the steps needed to get up and running with alf.io

Will you help us? If you're willing to do that, I'll allocate some time to answer any other question you might have.

Thanks,
Celestino

Celestino,

Yes, I would like to help because you guys have created a very valuable service and I want to contribute. I think I will be great at helping with the documentation side since my technical experience is not that great. Let me go through the process of configuring and setting up. Once it starts working I will document and ask you for feedback.

Thank you very much for all you do!

I am still in the process of creating my first event.

1. I keep getting this error message: "Event Geolocation is missing. Please check maps' configuration" which is preventing me from saving the event. I verified that I am using a new valid API key and followed the instructions on the link that Celestino provided in his previous answer. Anyone has an idea what exactly is causing this error message?

2. Can I change events url to something other than */event/* ? Like change it to */tickets/*?

Thanks!

the following is the google maps configuration we use for our production systems:

please make sure that you've all the Geocoding and Maps APIs enabled.
Please consider that every modification can take up to 5 min to be published.

this is not possible at the moment, but we might try to implement this for alf.io v2 (ETA ~Q4 2018)
