Indian Social Institute - Bangalore and the Alternative Law Forum invites you to a two day workshop titled
"Unpacking Communalism and Gender". The workshop is aimed at understanding concepts of gender, communalism and their intersections.
In the current socio-political situation in the country, restrictive communal ideologies are violating the rights of the marginalized communities. In particular, women are at the receiving end of narrow and parochial communal ideas which infringe on their autonomy and bodily integrity. This is done by censoring women at multiple levels from deciding what they should wear, who they should talk to, when, how and how many children to give birth to etc., The idea of "protecting" the women is used to reinforce patriarchal ideas of women being weaker and in need of protection.
Further, in times of communal conflicts, it is the women who are at the receiving end of violence. The women are looked at as the bearers of the community's pride and violence, in particular, sexual violence on the women of a community is looked at as bringing down a particular community itself.
The two day workshop will explore various themes on gender, communalism and their intersections through group exercises and sessions conducted by experts. The details are as follows:
