Friday, 13th September, 2024 will mark 4 years of Umar Khalid’s incarceration. To mark this occasion, special screenings of Lalit Vachani’s new film - ‘Prisoner No. 626710 is Present’ - are being organized  by citizens initiatives in different cities across India between the 13th and 15th of September. The discussions following the screenings will call attention, not just to Umar Khalid’s imprisonment,  but to the continuing and unjust incarceration of many other political prisoners.

September 13 also happens to be the day when the freedom fighter Jatindra Nath Das, Bhagat Singh’s comrade in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army, died at the age of 25 (in 1929) in Lahore Central Jail, after he went on a prolonged hunger strike in protest against the conditions in which political prisoners were being kept. Since then September 13 has been observed as ‘Political Prisoners’ Day’ in India.”

Synopsis:
On September 13, 2020 Umar Khalid a charismatic student leader and a recent PhD. from
India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was arrested under the draconian
UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) – a law that defines prisoners as terrorists and
allows the Indian state to imprison people without due process.
His crime: as an Indian Muslim, he had dared to dissent against the new citizenship law that
the Indian state was trying to impose on its people.
Using found footage of his past speeches along with a forensic analysis of how he was
framed by the right-wing, Hindu nationalist media, Umar Khalid’s close friends Banojyotsna
Lahiri and Shuddhabrata Sengupta reconstruct the chronology of events that led to his tragic
imprisonment.
It has been over 1400 days since Umar Khalid was arrested. He and his friends still await a
fair hearing in court.
Please do join us for the screening.
