ABOUT THE EVENT

This October 4th, we will be discussing the relevance of Gandhi and his ideology in contemporary India. The event will have music and discussions. We will also have interactive stalls to understand our constitutional values and engage in dialogues on democracy

WHO WILL BE WITH US?

ADAVI is an art collective dedicated to the proliferation and promotion of folk arts. They intend to create a meaningful intersection between traditional folk practices and contemporary artistic expressions. At the heart of the collective is Parai, an ancient percussion instrument that embodies the spirit of celebration and community.The collective brings together artists who share a passion for celebrating life through art. They dream of building a society free from discrimination, where equality transcends caste, gender, color, religion, race, class and creed.

Prof. Janaki Nair was a Professor of History at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi until retirement in 2020.  She is the author of  Mysore Modern: Reconceptualising the Region under Princely Rule (2011); The Promise of the Metropolis: Bangalore’s Twentieth Century (2005); and  Miners and Millhands: Work, Culture and Politics in Princely Mysore (1998).  

Prof. Sumathi Ramaswamy is James B. Duke Professor of History and Chair of the Department of History, Duke University.  She has published on language politics, gender studies, spatial studies and the history of cartography, visual studies and the modern history of art, and more recently, digital humanities and the history of philanthropy in modern India.  She is a co-founder of “Tasveerghar: A Digital Network of South Asian Popular Visual Culture.” Her most recent works related to Gandhi are Gandhi in the Gallery: The Art of Disobedience (New Delhi: Roli Books, 2020), the digital project B is for Bapu: Gandhi in the Art of the Child in Modern India (2020).
