the gravedigger is here. she has been around, howling outside our windows, knocking on our doors, waiting to tell us her story. we have walked in graveyards, past her. we have seen her, but looked through her.
who does she talk to? how does she communicate?
she has her tales of love and longing. she has her share of dreams and anxieties.
where there are more dead people than alive, the gravedigger, she is here to tell you a story... many a stories...

Gravedigger is a one woman play featuring Ponni Arasu who plays a female graveyard worker who charges herself with the responsibility to care for, and honour the dead. In her village, a young activist is murdered by the police. As the police guard the corpse, risking her own safety, the gravedigger attempts to perform the last rites on his body. During this act of love, she tells his story: organising agricultural workers, taking on caste injustice as well as being loved by his family and community. By continuing to speak of the value of life from the field of the dead, she confronts the authority of the state in matters of life and death. The play is inspired by Sophocles' Antigone and the exemplary courage of the poorest and most marginal people in the world who find ways to resist under all sorts of harsh circumstances.
Gravedigger is a production of Marapachchi Theatre, a feminist theatre collective based in Madras, India. It is directed by A. Mangai and written by V. Geetha. Sets, makeup, costume by Indu Vashist. The performance will be in English with singing in Tamil.
