On 15th April 2014, the Supreme Court pronounced the landmark decision of NALSA v Union of India.
This decision for the first time, legally recognised the ‘transgender identity’. The judicial decision empathised with the trans community on the continued stigma, transphobia experienced by them. It held the right of “self-identification” at the centre of this decision. A decade after, how have we as movements dealt with these questions?

2014ರ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 15ರಂದು, ಭಾರತದ ಸುಪ್ರೀಂ ಕೋರ್ಟ್ ನಾಲ್ಸಾ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಯೂನಿಯನ್ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ಪ್ರಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ತೀರ್ಪನ್ನು ನೀಡಿತು.
ಈ ತೀರ್ಪು ಮೊತ್ತಮೊದಲು 'ಟ್ರಾನ್ಸ್‌ಜೆಂಡರ್‌ ಗುರುತಿಗೆ' ಕಾನೂನು ಮಾನ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿತು. ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯ ಟ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ಸಮುದಾಯ ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯ, ಲೈಂಗಿಕ ಭೇದಭಾವ, ಮತ್ತು ಮರೆಮಾಚಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಬದುಕಿನ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಸಹಾನುಭೂತಿಯನ್ನೂ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿತು. ಈ ತೀರ್ಪು "ಸ್ವಯಂ ಗುರುತಿಸುವ ಹಕ್ಕುನ್ನು ತೀರ್ಪಿನ ಕೇಂದ್ರಬಿಂದು ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು.
