Muscle function involves creating movement, maintaining posture, and stabilizing joints through the contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. These functions are performed by three types of muscle: skeletal, which allows voluntary movement; cardiac, which pumps blood in the heart; and smooth, which controls involuntary actions in organs and blood vessels. Muscles also generate heat to maintain body temperature and support other bodily functions.
Key functions
  • Movement: Muscles contract and relax to pull on bones, enabling all voluntary actions like walking, speaking, and chewing, as well as involuntary movements like breathing and the pumping of blood by the heart.
  • Posture and position: Muscles constantly work to hold the body upright and maintain its position against gravity.
  • Joint stability: Muscles that wrap around joints help to stabilize them and keep them in place.
  • Heat generation: Muscle contractions, such as shivering, generate heat to help maintain the body's temperature.
  • Support and protection: Muscles provide support for soft tissues and can protect internal organs.
Types of muscle
  • Skeletal muscle: These are the muscles you control consciously, attached to bones via tendons. They are responsible for movement, posture, and generating heat.
  • Cardiac muscle: Found only in the heart, this is an involuntary muscle that contracts to pump blood throughout the body.
  • Smooth muscle: These are involuntary muscles that line the walls of organs like the stomach and blood vessels. They are responsible for moving substances through systems like the digestive and circulatory systems.
