As people will have gathered from some of my early posts on the forum
I had a substantial association with a fundamentalist Christian group.
At a convocation I was asked to give a talk on 'Aspects of Education'.
My part was preceded by a testimony meeting. People from many walks of
life spoke briefly on how faith had helped reclaim their lives from
problems financial or to do with family, dependency etc. Very
inspirational but such reaffirmations of group faith lead to elevated
levels of expectancy. When my dry as the 'hills of Gilboa' sounding
topic was announced people began to stream out.
However I know my stagecraft and how to 'own the stage'. My muse for
such things is Richard Burton who could fill the length and breadth of
an entire Welsh valley with a sonorous declaim from the Bard.I spoke
quietly but distictly "We should learn from our friends the
Catholics". In a movement which is root and branch anti -popery that
brought people flooding back to their seats. Then I hit my rhetorical
straps "what did St Ignatius say?" I demanded. Dramatic sweeping
gesture condemning the whole dang lot into outer darkness -"Give me
your child until he is SEVEN!" Then I banged the lecturn so everbody
jumped "AND ANYBODY ELSE CAN HAVE HIM".
People stayed though it could have been that my raised finger bespoke
accusation if anyone did move -"you are no better than a Caananite
placing his living child in the glowing hot arms of that iron
monstrocity Moloch!'
I went on with my usual modest (and hopefully pleasant) demeanor to
outline some of the real issues facing the young; peer pressure, body
image, cyber -bullying etc. Over arching all of course is that raison
d'etre of the whole educational edifice -helping the student achieve
his/her potential. Glib answers won't do and they require well thought
out educational strategies.Something must have worked because I
received a standing ovation.
I continue to encourage our teachers to take advantage of
opportunities which arise to hone their skills with youth and
children. No bureaucracy, indeed no government could withstand the
assault of a determined group of parents who believed a system was
underming the well -being of their offspring.
The group did not concede a separate soul or entity. We were each a
unified whole into which divinity breathed His being. Perhaps the
meaning was beyond scripture to explain.
