WABA Awards this Wednesday!

Hey folks,

Quick note that the 2026 WABA Awards are happening this Wednesday! We’re looking forward to celebrating community members, advocates, and elected officials across the region working to make our streets safer and to improve bicycling for all, including some outstanding champions from Virginia. 2026 WABA Awardees:

• Public Leadership Award: U.S. Representative Don Beyer, District 8, Virginia

• Public Leadership Award: Maryland State Delegate Julie Palakovich Carr, District 17, Montgomery County

• Jack Koczela Trail Champion Award: Paul Gilbert, Former Executive Director, NOVA Parks

• Community Advocate Award: Dr. Nicole Retland, Founder, DC Go-Go Trails Collective

• Heart and Soul Award: Lelac Almagor,  Founder, WABA Cargo Bike Library; Founder, DC Family Bike Fest

• Biking for All Award: Ward 7 Bikes

• Educator of the Year: Dr. Ariel Bierbaum, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, University of Maryland

• Super Volunteer of the Year: Edyth Dwyer

• Community Campaign Award: The Capital Market

We’re gathering on Wednesday, October 21st from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Brookland Busboys & Poets. We’ll provide hearty appetizers and beverages. 

We couldn’t do this work without you and we hope you can make it to celebrate those among us who continue to go above and beyond to make biking better! I look forward to commemorating the progress we’ve made and to building momentum for the work ahead.
