Hi All,
Here is the question we studied at the class.

1. Draw a flow chart that shows the relation of factors that FM claims affects our ability to make use of a new idea.
[Note: In the original English text, there is further explanation in the preceding 2nd paragraph, but the three factors mentioned by Alexander are clearly articulated in paragraph 3. They are highlighted in red with bracketed numbers [1], [2] & [3] added to the text.]
Full Text Version: Chapter 1, from 3rd Paragraph:
The significance, however, of the fact that [1] a person's attempt to make practical use of a new idea is conditioned by his conception of the written or spoken word cannot be fully realized until we connect it with the further fact, that [2] this conception, in its turn, is conditioned by the standard of the psycho-physical functioning of the individual, [3] this standard again being influenced by the standard of sensory appreciation; in other words, that the accuracy or otherwise of the individual conception depends upon the standard of psycho-physical functioning and of sensory appreciation present. It is our total disregard of this fundamental fact that, in my opinion, is at the root of all the confusion and uncertainty so prevalent to-day in the sphere of education, and, for that matter, in every sphere of practical life.
Summary Text Version: Chapter 1, 3rd Paragraph:
The accuracy or otherwise of the [1] individual conception of any idea depends upon [2] the standard of psycho-physical functioning and [3] sensory appreciation present.
Japanese Sentence: あらゆるアイデアに対する人それぞれの解釈がどれだけ正確であるかは、心身機能のレベルやその時の感覚的評価にかかっています。

So MANY DIFFERENT flow charts were produced by the students. Try it out yourself. What happens, is that you keep redoing it and redoing it. My final version ended up looking like some kind of nuclear reaction. I don't have a good drawing program to make the flow chart - but I will scan in my hand written version and upload it later. Please wait.
