Sony entered the video game console market in 1994 and never looked back, with the PlayStation brand eventually growing into the dominant, immediately recognizable powerhouse it is in 2021. Today, the PlayStation 5 is a promising device with technological prowess its predecessors could only dream of - but power isn't the only factor in determining what makes a great console. After nearly three decades in the console market, which PlayStation is the best - and which is the worst?

Since then, Sony has become arguably the most dominant force in video games, with the PlayStation 4 achieving a level of success in a competitive market that would've been difficult to predict heading into its 2013 launch window. Whether or not it becomes the best-selling console of all time, it will either fall short of or surpass the mark set by some familiar competition - its ancestor, the PlayStation 2, which remains the top of the pack when it comes to console sales. With a full five PlayStation consoles now in the family, the differences between each PlayStation has become even more pronounced. Here is every PlayStation console, ranked from worst to best.

As it turned out, Sakaguchi's statement wasn't completely prophetic for the PS3 games library, even if it is the weakest the brand has ever had. Some great games did get their start on PS3, with The Last of Us, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves all finding a home on the console. Still, that lineup isn't exactly stellar when compared to other Sony libraries, with its best entry, The Last of Us, doing a lot of the heavy lifting. To top everything off, the PS3 was ugly and bulky, too. It's a definite low point in the console brand's history, and if the PS5 had another year under its belt, the PS3 would almost certainly rank at the bottom of this list.

If the PS4 doesn't become the best-selling game console of all time, it will only be because it comes from a family of overachievers. The PlayStation 4 ushered in an era of Sony dominance that the industry is still reeling from, with reports from as recent as six months ago highlighting sales that more than doubled those of the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The technology behind the PS4 saw it lauded for its graphics when compared to competitors, and its $399 USD price point, coupled with a better understanding of digital rights management, made it much more consumer friendly than its predecessor.

But a great console isn't just made from an understanding of the climate it's being introduced into, and the hardware backed up its promise with truly great PS4 exclusives. God of War, Spider-Man PS4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake are all on PS4, and that's just scratching the surface of its incredibly deep games library. It's certainly one of the best in history, and it helped cement the PS4 as must-own during its generation.

Consoles don't accidentally end up as the best-selling of all time. The PS2 took the promise of the PS1 and ran with it to the tune of over 3800 games and over 1.5 billion copies of them sold, alongside sales over 155 million units of the console itself. The sheer depth of the console's games library is wild, but here's a quick list of some of its greatest hits: Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, God of War, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Devil May Cry, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Sly Cooper. That's not counting the many more niche but still great entries like Dark Cloud 2 that help round out that depth.

It goes beyond the games and the sales, though. The PS2's legacy is rooted in how it took an already amazing console and improved on it in nearly every way. At the time, including a DVD drive was a huge boon to families, making the console a home entertainment unit. The graphical leap from PS1 to PS2 was dramatic, and the console's backwards compatibility meant fans who had PS1 libraries still got to enjoy them on the new console. So much of the nostalgia surrounding the PS2 is at least partially informed by its public perception as a consumer-friendly, forward-thinking console that wowed people both with its games and its innovations. The PS2 is one of the most important consoles ever created, and for that reason, it also ranks as the best PlayStation console ever made.

Sony also bundles PlayStation 5 consoles with popular games. Spider-Man 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare III are both being bundled with slim PS5 disc-drive models. PS5 bundles are normally priced at $560, which presents a $10 discount over buying a game and console separately. However, the Spider-Man 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare III bundles are discounted to $500 for the 2023 holiday season. Check out our roundup of all the best PS5 deals for more savings.

But as they say, the cheese cannot stand alone. A few more add-ons will make your game session that much easier and enjoyable. Sony's DualShock controller is one of the best game controllers available, and the PS5 is the first console that can really take advantage of a great home-theater setup. To that end, we've compiled our favorite PS5 accessories, including a few luxury picks for those of you looking to turn your living room into a cathedral for your new PS5.

Eye-tracking is the standout feature here. It's accurate and intuitive to use, and our reviewer Eric Ravenscraft noted that you can even make eye contact with characters in games and watch them react. The Sense VR controllers boast best-in-class haptic feedback, making it feel like you're actually grabbing something when you're interacting with objects in VR. It's 2023 and game consoles still don't ship with two controllers. The first thing you'll need with your new PS5 is an extra gamepad if you want to get in on any couch co-op, and the best one is still Sony's official DualSense model. That might change in the coming months, but right now, no other third-party controller really packs the same level of immersive feedback the DualSense does.

If a soundbar isn't enough, and you are really decking out your gaming space, the Nakamichi Shockwafe system is a great way to go. It's super expensive, but for that price you get two subwoofers, a soundbar, and four surround sound speakers. It's overkill in the best way.

Another essential component of a good gaming TV for the PS5 console is its input lag and response time. Input lag is the time it takes for a frame sent by a source (like a gaming console) to be displayed on screen. A low input lag makes the entire experience more responsive, as your inputs on a controller or mouse are reflected quickly on the screen. The best TVs can have an input lag as low as five milliseconds. Response time is the time it takes for a pixel to change from one color to the next, typically measured from a fully black pixel to a fully white one or from one shade of gray (either dark or bright gray) to the opposite shade of gray. OLEDs are the uncontested best TVs regarding response time, as their pixel transitions are nearly instantaneous. But the best LED TVs for gaming also have very fast transitions. A slow response time is noticeable, as fast-moving objects on screen leave blurry trails behind them.

An important factor in how games look on a TV is its ability to preserve its contrast in Game Mode when playing on the PS5. To cut down on processing and thus improve input lag, TVs disable many of their processing features in Game Mode. We look at whether the TV's local dimming feature is still fast and accurate in that mode, which includes seeing if the TV's dimming zone transitions are more noticeable than in other picture modes and if the TV's blooming performance differs from these other modes. The best gaming TVs don't show any apparent reduction in contrast in Game Mode.

The best TV for PS5 that we've tested is the Samsung S90C OLED. It's a fantastic TV that delivers an incredible gaming experience. Fast-paced action games look outstanding thanks to the nearly instantaneous response time, so there's almost no noticeable blur or ghosting behind fast-moving objects. Its input lag is extremely low, which makes for extremely responsive gaming. It's bright and colorful in HDR and SDR, so your games look great, especially in a dark room. Due to its HDMI 2.1 bandwidth ports, the TV can take full advantage of everything the PS5 offers, including 4k @ 120Hz gaming in games that support it. And If you're also a PC gamer, the Samsung can reach 4k @ 144Hz on all its HDMI ports.

If you'd like an OLED TV that is part of Sony's 'Perfect for PS5' lineup, which includes a few Sony-exclusive features designed for PS5 gamers, look up the more expensive Sony A95L OLED. It has Auto HDR Tone Mapping, which automatically optimizes the HDR settings for your TV, ensuring you get the best HDR experience possible without manually playing with the settings. However, it has worse input lag than the Samsung model, so gaming isn't as responsive, and the TV is much more expensive. You could also opt for the higher-end Samsung S95C OLED, which is brighter than the S90C, but its price premium is not worth it for most people.
