FLIR FX security cam puts FBI-level tech in the palm of your hand
Apr 7th 2015, 12:00

I’m staring at a screen full of impossible. The video playback on my iPhone shows a half dozen versions of myself walking around my kitchen and den. A timestamp follows each one of my doppelgangers around the room. What does it mean? Is this magic?
It’s actually FBI-grade surveillance technology squeezed onto a mobile device thanks to FLIR
You may remember FLIR, the company that found a way to add thermal imaging to your garden-variety iPhone 5 and 5S. That was cool technology, but mostly for nerds. FLIR’s new FX Wireless HD video monitoring system is a product any security-conscious home owner may love. Read more... More about Reviews, Tech, Apps Software, Gadgets, and Mashable Choice

Rand Paul expected to announce his 2016 run today
Apr 7th 2015, 11:55

Sen. Rand Paul, a tea party favorite and frequent antagonist of leaders of his Republican Party, is ready to test how much change voters want, both for their government and for the GOP.
Paul is set to begin his White House campaign on Tuesday, kicking off the presidential run with a rally in downtown Louisville, then jetting to early nominating states with a pitch aimed at the libertarian corners of the GOP. Paul begins the 2016 race as the second fully declared candidate, behind Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, but he could face as many as 20 rivals for the nomination before the lead-off Iowa caucuses early next year. Read more... 14 ways people smuggle drugs into music festivals
Apr 7th 2015, 11:04

Editor's note: Mashable does not condone the use of illegal drugs, and discourages anyone from smuggling them in violation of event policy.
Miley Cyrus exposed our fascination with party drugs in 2013 when she confused listeners who heard the lyrics "dancing with Molly" instead of "dancing with Miley."
MDMA, which is short for 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse — is known as "Molly" to most of us. It's a synthetic drug that releases serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, overwhelming users with feelings of euphoria, energy and emotional warmth — hence its other name, Ecstasy, when in pill form. The Teletubbies are returning with some unexpected friends
Apr 7th 2015, 10:57

LONDON — Just as we were recovering from that horrifying video of the Teletubbies in black-and-white, the sinister foursome are back again, with Jim Broadbent as a talking trumpet and Absolutely Fabulous' Jane Horrocks as the "tubby phone."
The actors are set to be joined by Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton when Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po return to BBC program CBeebies later this year.
The rebooted version of the show will stay true to its original run, which saw around a billion children in 120 countries tune in between 1997 and 2001, with the same characters and style but "a refreshed and contemporary look," according to producers. Tony Blair enters UK pre-election fray, tells everyone to 'get real'
Apr 7th 2015, 10:50

LONDON — In what felt like a weird throwback to the late 1990s and 2000s, Tony Blair was back in election campaigning mode Tuesday.
The former prime minister publicly threw his weight behind current Labour leader Ed Miliband while slamming the Conservatives' plan to hold a referendum on the UK leaving the European Union.
Blair warned that a EU referendum is a "completely unacceptable gamble with our nation's future" and asked if a Conservative government would hold periodic referendums "just to check popular feeling."

20 dogs that want to talk to you about wearing your retainer
Apr 7th 2015, 10:30

Not every dog is born with pretty pearly whites. Some have more to worry about than just puppy breath.
Humans fortunate enough to have the resources are subjected to the orthodontist for braces during those awkward teen years — you know, when a little bit of metal in your mouth is the least embarrassing thing about you
But dogs aren't so lucky. Our little furry friends are usually only given braces if their mangled teeth pose a health risk, leaving us with some seriously adorable snaggle-toothed canines

The Book of Yeezus replaces every mention of God in The Bible with Kanye
Apr 7th 2015, 10:22

“In the beginning Kanye created the heaven and the earth… And Kanye said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
So begins The Book of Yeezus, a comic and gleefully sacrilegious tome on sale on Etsy that promises spiritual enlightenment for a celebrity-saturated age.
The text, described by its creators as "an interventionist art, coffee table novelty," takes the Book of Genesis and replaces every mention of God with "Kanye" or Yeezus", attempting to answer some big questions along the way.
"What if the Bible, the most singularly significant publication in the ancient canon of Western tradition, were updated to reflect our modern society? What would it look like?" Read more... More about Kanye West, Entertainment, Music, Yeezus, and Book Of Yeezus

Researchers build aluminum battery that can be charged in one minute
Apr 7th 2015, 09:43

If there's one major issue plaguing smartphones, smartwatches and other gadgets we use every day, it's battery life. Now, a team of researchers at Stanford University has built an aluminum-ion battery prototype which offers several improvements over today's ubiquitous lithium-ion batteries, including super-fast charging times
The team's aluminum-ion battery sounds like a dream come true for gadget manufacturers — a perfect battery with few flaws.
Until now, aluminum-ion batteries weren't able to produce a high enough voltage, especially after many recharge cycles. But the prototype created by the Stanford researchers consists of an aluminum anode and a cathode made of graphite — a combination of materials that allows for producing sufficient voltage (about two volts), even after thousands of recharge cycles Read more... Mass grave with bodies of Iraqi soldiers killed by ISIS found in Tikrit
Apr 7th 2015, 09:01

Iraqi forensic teams in the newly liberated city of Tikrit have started exhuming bodies from mass graves believed to contain hundreds of soldiers killed by Islamic State militants last year, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.
Around 1,700 soldiers were captured by the extremists in June as they were trying to flee Camp Speicher, an air base on the outskirt of Tikrit that previously served as a U.S. military facility, following an onslaught that stunned security forces and the military, which melted away as the militants advanced and captured key cities and towns in the country's north and west. Cantheyseemydick.com tells you if the U.S. government is looking at your dick pics
Apr 7th 2015, 08:35

After Edward Snowden's occasionally hilarious interview with British comedian John Oliver, we know that many people's main concern when it comes to privacy is the U.S. government's ability to see your private parts
In the interview, Oliver goes through various U.S. government surveillance programs, asking Snowden to explain their impact on the average citizen in terms of dick pics, with results that are both funny and informative
Now, software engineer and web designer Olivier Lacan has turned that info into a website, first noticed by The Verge — cantheyseemydick.com.

Twitter officially lets you retweet with comments now
Apr 7th 2015, 07:41

Twitter revamped its retweet feature on Monday, making it easier for users to plug other people's tweets and add commentary of their own.
Retweeting was a more tedious process until now if folks wanted to comment on a link. You either manually copied and pasted the link into a fresh tweet, or if you wanted to offer more context, copy-pasted a tweet's original text into a new tweet with a comment shoehorned in — so long as you stuck to that 140 character limit.
But this latest approach lets you skip all that copy-pasting nonsense, prompting you now for a pithy remark before hitting the Retweet button, like so: Read more... More about Social, Twitter, Retweet, Social Media, and Apps Software

Bike-sharing is taking off around the world
Apr 7th 2015, 07:12

The bicycle is en vogue.
Over the past decade, an increasing number of cities around the world have adopted bike-sharing systems — the setup that allows urban dwellers to share bicycles for short-term amounts of time for a fee (think Citi Bike in New York City or Santander Cycles in London).
According to a recent blog post from leading bike-sharing consultancy MetroBike, 855 cities across the globe had bike-sharing systems in 2014. That's compared to 703 one year earlier in 2013, and only 11 cities a decade earlier in 2004.
Overall, there are nearly one million bicycles being shared worldwide, the majority of which — 753,508 — are in China. France has the second-largest fleet, followed by Spain, the United States and Germany. Read more... More about Sustainability, Transportation, Social Good, Cities, and Bike Sharing

The parent company of U.S. company Dallas Buyers Club LLC, Voltage Pictures, who owns the rights to the 2013 Oscar-winning film, requested the personal details of 4,726 customers — who allegedly seeded the movie on BitTorrent — from Australian Internet service providers (ISPs)
The request is known as "preliminary discovery" and is where a party is unable to identify a person they wish to sue and seeks help from the court in identifying the person — in this case, by obtaining the names and addresses of the users. Prince Harry tells fan: 'Selfies are bad'

It's official, Prince Harry isn't a fan of the selfie
The prince told a girl to stop taking selfies as he arrived in Australia for a month-long exchange program with the Australian Defence Force. The fourth-in-line to the throne shunned the waiting fan's request for a photo, as he visited the Australian War Memorial in Canberra — telling her to turn the camera around.
"I hate selfies, seriously, you need to get out of it," the prince said, jokingly. "I know you are young, selfies are bad. Just take a normal photograph."

Nina Dobrev leaves 'The Vampire Diaries', fans in meltdown
Apr 7th 2015, 01:10

The Vampire Diaries is losing a major player
Nina Dobrev, the female lead of the series, announced via Instagram on Monday that she is leaving the show after the sixth season, which is currently airing on The CW.
In her statement, the actress, who plays Elena Gilbert on the drama, said: "I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime."
Dearest TVD Family, I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. There's more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you'll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert's life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show.' ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't. Love, Nina Read more...

The new way brands like Hostess use social media: playing dumb
Apr 7th 2015, 00:30

There is one golden rule of Twitter: if you make a mistake, users will pounce on you. Now some brands are trying to use that fact to their advantage.
In another world, this might be called trolling — saying something you don't mean just to get a reaction — but because it's by brands, it's a strategy. The latest example of that phenomenon is Hostess, the snack food brand, which decided to give its Twitter followers some manufactured outrage to feast on Monday. It shared a tweet about the opening day of the baseball season juxtaposed with a photo that said "touchdown" in bold letters.
