I want to add a marine toilet with holding tank in my newly acquired Albin 25.

The biggest question is the location for the holding tank.   Any recommendations.   In my boat the space starboard of the helm, aft of the head,  is occupied with batteries, charger, etc.

I am thinking of the Raritan PHII for the toilet.   Any recommendations?  I value simple, low maintenance, foolproof.

I am thinking about 10 gal for the holding tank.   Is this enough?

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

regards,  Peter    M/V  Bella, Whidbey Island

In my boat, the batteries were raised and the holding tank installed beneath them.  The holding tank is poly and has a contoured bottom that is reasonably close to the hull shape at this location.  The batteries sit upon a 3/4 ply shelf that spans the bulk heads.  I didn't do the installation but I did replace the previous shelf with the new one and modified the installation for a better pumping arrangement.

In our boat, the batteries were moved to the locker immediately aft and the holding tank sits were the batteries used to be.  I just removed the old aluminum holding tank and am in the process of installing a new poly one.

Cheers

I find 50% of a boat project is deciding what to do. Then 50% more to decide how to do it and 100% to the project. That's about double what I think it should take.
My tank was installed by the previous owner and is in the starboard lazarette aft of where are the batteries are. It's only an 8 gal tank and I would recommend larger.  There is still a good size lazarette, just not as deep.
There is a Y valve in the head so I can select either the tank or direct discharge. I know that's not allowed anymore. There is also a mascerator pump and T to the pump out just outboard of the batteries under the helm seat.  I'm happy with the installation. Other than the small tank size.
We often cruise in remote areas of the BC coast where there are no pump out stations so pump the tank when out in large open water.

Good luck
Tim

I installed a holding tank in the head between the head and the aft bulkhead, between the sink and the hull. It is vertical and has a bottom drain as well as a deck pump out. The tank was a standard size so readily available. The design and install were technically straight forward and relatively easy. I found a source online that was helpful. If you are at all interested I can get some pictures etc.

Ours has a 14 gallon plastic tank under the starboard seat at the galley table/vee bunk, in front of the closet.  Directly across, on the port side, is a similar sized (12 gallons I think) aux. freshwater tank, also plastic, giving us 25-30 gallons of potable water storage.  This leaves us lots of room for more batteries when i see the need.

We also have the Y-valve, located back in the head for either/or dumping with the deck pump out fitting above the closet.  the Y-valve is securely locked out from discharge with a 29 cent ty-wrap.

(Edit by RA:  Ours doesn't have a y-valve, I described it incorrectly.  There is a tee fitting in the discharge hose directly below the deck pump out fitting.  The side of the tee goes to a large Whale gusher pump mounted just below the window under the shelf above the toilet, hand operated, that connects to the thru hull for dumping the old-fashioned way.  The deck fitting must be closed when operating the hand pump for overboard disposal. It's a vacuum thing.  The discharge pulls from the bottom of the tank and the outlet from the head enters the tank near the top. The ty-wrap simply "locks" the gate valve at the below waterline thru hull.  I became intimately reacquainted with all this loveliness today.)

Here's how I altered our Albin 25 for a proper head, holding tank + an Espar in the traditional location...The batteries pictured was further changed to a single 12v starting battery in this location, then added two 6v golfcart batteries under fwd end of port side settee.

Oh, and added an extra 7gal water tank above stuffing box. The holding tank was 14gal I think.

Has anyone replaced the water tank in the bow? Mine hasn't been in use in years (no idea how many) and I am leery of its condition;  the plastic lid has several through-cracks in it. It seems I would have quite a bit of dismantling to switch it out, so I may try to clean it out and try to find a replacement lid.

Is that a water tank mounted above your stuffing box?

It’s not that hard to get it out, but it’s a weird shape to try and find a replacement. Lots of possibilities available for a “bladder” tank though, and it’s a good opportunity to add more tankage if you boat in the Salt Chuck like we do.  Good luck finding a lid, but you could try to cut out the original port and replace it with a thru-bolted plastic deck hatch/plate.
Please post pics of what you come up with.

Tim, I may be able to source you a 30L poly tank if you are interested. Someone doing some work for me mentioned he had some, maybe for *cheap*.  Let me know.

Thanks Joe
Would they be a size that would fit under the floor by the stuffing box?
I have never considered a tank there till I saw the picture. Wondering if it could be extra fuel?
I would be interested in that.

Tim, I will find out out dimensions and price, and relay them to you directly.
How would you rig such a fuel tank? With a transfer pump and y-valve, or just a reversing transfer pump maybe?

I haven’t thought through the details. A reversing transfer pump sounds like the best option. If such a product exists

Hi Tim,
The poly tank I installed was freshwater. 7gal if I remember...sold boat a few years ago. A good source for these tanks is Century Plastics, Richmond, BC. I had two spin-in fittings installed, one for a vent and the other fill/drain - inlet/outlet...it was at a level when the original tank filled, so did the new one. It drained at the same time as well.
