I need to remove the rudder on my 1975 Albin and so far I can not find any information on how to do it.  Studying it does not make it look obvious as to how to start.  Any help or suggestions of where to look would be appreciated.

Not sure if the following is the proper way or not but when I last removed the rudder on Mana Kai this is what I did…

1.       Make sure boat is high enough to allow the total length of the rudder shaft to drop straight down.

2.       From the bottom, remove the 90 degree Pipehead rudder mount.

3.       From the top, remove the steering cable and crank arm.

4.       Look close, I cannot remember if there was snap ring near the top of the rudder shaft (I don’t think so).

5.       With a rubber mallet or hammer with a block of wood (between the shaft and hammer) and tap the rudder shaft downwards.

6.       Have someone else gently pull down on the rudder shaft from the bottom outside the boat while tapping the shaft from the top.

7.       The shaft should move down slowly until it drops out.

8.       Reverse the procedure to re-install with one exception. I used a small hydraulic jack to push the rudder shaft upwards* NOTE – be sure to watch the rudder shaft is moving upwards – the worry is if it was binding you could unsettle the boat on its blocks. This did not happen with mine, it just sled back up into place.

I hope this helps your project.

Stevan and Nancy. Mat has given his version of how to go about the rudder removal and replacement. I have been involved with rudder removal on several occasions and found no serious problems. The rudder sits in a fitting at the bottom fastened  with a allen bolt. This is easy to remove and return. The top end has the keyed quadrant fastened with a allen bolt. You may remove the steering cable gear if you wish but it is not really necessary if you are careful with the handling.I feel that it is better to remove the quadrant by tapping it gently upward after loosening the allen bolt. Then work on the bottom end. After removing the bottom allen bolt you should have no problem lifting the shaft out of the fitting. And returning it to operating position. Question, why do you need to remove the rudder, for a shaft problem, yes, for a removal of the propellor,no. For a prop removal, simply cvhange the angle of the rudder and it can be slid off. Any other info required,E Mail Me. Good luck, Marv. Glover

Good call Marvin, I forgot about a few of those things.

I only remembered the 10,000 foot view ;)
