Mayor Applyrs Announces $50,000 in Private Funding for Youth-Led Climate Projects Aimed at Neighborhood Vibrancy
City of Albany Selected out of 300 Cities Globally for Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund; City Application to Open This Summer
(Albany, NY) Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026 – Mayor Dr. Dorcey L. Applyrs today announced that the City of Albany will receive $50,000 to support youth-led climate projects as part of
Bloomberg
Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund. An additional $50,000 could be awarded following the successful implementation of the projects, for a total of $100,000 in funding for the City. The initiative will provide
Albany with funding and technical assistance to help the City engage young people in the development and implementation of local climate solutions. The announcement is in line with the Administration’s 30-Action goals to implement the Albany Climate Action
Plan and support heat mitigation efforts in Albany.
The program empowers young residents, ages 15 to 24, to be actively involved in the design of projects that address climate challenges and improve Albany neighborhoods. Albany is one of 300 cities worldwide selected to participate. As part of the program, the
City of Albany will launch a competitive application process inviting young people to submit ideas that advance sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community improvement. Selected projects will receive funding and support from City staff to help
bring those ideas to life. Additional details regarding eligibility and application requirements will be announced later this summer.
“Albany’s young people care deeply about the future of their city, and they, too, deserve a seat at the table when it comes to shaping that future,” said
Mayor Applyrs. “This initiative gives our youth the opportunity to take their ideas and turn them into action. Whether it’s creating greener spaces, improving sustainability, or developing innovative climate solutions, we are excited to support the next
generation of civic leaders as they help build a stronger Albany.”
The initiative aligns closely with Albany’s broader sustainability goals and ongoing community engagement efforts. Earlier this year, the City’s Office of Sustainability hosted public engagement sessions as part of the development of Albany’s Climate Action
Plan, providing residents with opportunities to help shape the City’s environmental future.
Jason West, Director of Sustainability for the City of Albany, said “Because of climate change, within 50 years Albany could be as hot as Louisiana is today – and getting hotter. While we have all the solutions we need to prevent this, those solutions
need to be implemented. Whether we do or not, today’s youth will have to live with the consequences of the choices we make today. Engaging them in creating real-world solutions will help to cultivate new civic leaders for the more difficult years to come”
This announcement builds on an ongoing partnership with the Bloomberg Foundation and the City of Albany. The City encourages all interested young people to participate and help develop solutions that strengthen Albany’s neighborhoods, improve environmental
outcomes, and create a more resilient future.
