Troy, NY chapter of Association for India’s Development (AID) presents

THE  $1000 CHALLENGE

If we raise $1000 in the next 2 weeks, it will be doubled by a generous donor.

Since its inception in 2003 the Troy, NY chapter of AID has raised and disbursed more than $40,000 for empowering marginalized communities in India by supporting projects in education, agriculture, health and women’s equality. It would not have been possible for us to do this without your support. Please donate  today so that we can get your contribution up to $1000 matched.

Below are some highlights of the projects we have recently supported.

1. Sustainable organic farming in Sunderbans, W Bengal.

Key Accomplishments:

  • Promoting sustainable farming through the use of environmentally, culturally, and socially

sound approaches.

  • 10,000 farmers are involved in 2014-15

  • 1000 + acres transformed

  • 75000 Kg of chemicals eliminated in 2013

  • Movement towards gender equity and enhanced visibility and legitimization of women’s  participation  in the community.

  • Resurgence of indigenous farming knowledge and community empowerment.

  • Creation of a medium for community organizing and potential for resisting exploitation and   subjugation.

2. Lok Shakthi Manch (LSM): a people’s rights movement addressing entitlement gaps caused by urban displacement in New Delhi.

Key Accomplishments:

  • The Manch has taken an admirable lead in protesting the disastrous cash for rations scheme being forcefully imposed by the government on the economically weaker sections in the city.

  • The Manch has come of age in being able to grasp the logic of how to avail of entitlements of water, electricity, education, and so on.

  • The women of the Manch have been energized enough to begin working in areas other than Bhalaswa, so much so that the name has been changed to Lok Shakti Manch.

  • LSM have completed a survey of the contribution made by people in such settlements to the development of land and housing, which should have significant impact on the assertion of the urban poor to lay claim to the city.

  • Another remarkable activity is LSM’s tentative exploration of the issue of livelihoods and how people contribute to the economy of the city. In the coming year it is hoped that they will be able to find the time and energy link up with other groups in Delhi and other towns so as to be able to forge a larger united alliance on an alternative paradigm of development itself.
