Dear Prahalad,
The Association for India's Development has approved emergency grants to support relief efforts in Uttarakhand, where over the past week torrential rains, massive flash floods and landslides have resulted in the death of 1000 people, while over 20,000 are still stranded. State agencies fear that the death toll might reach 5000, and lakhs of survivors would have lost their homes and livelihoods.
AID is currently supporting the immediate relief activities initiated by Goonj, an excellent organization, with whom AID has worked before during the Bihar floods of 2008. We have also established contacts with several other grassroots organizations in Uttarakhand, like Community Awareness Center, Maati and Chintan, who are getting ready for the short and long-term relief and rehabilitation work needed in the region.
At this hour of need, the survivors need an outpouring of generosity to compensate for the havoc wreaked by the floods. |
