Hi all,

I'm surprised someone hasn't already started the Obligatory Mobile Thread :)

I'm going to be in the UK for a week so I'm wondering if there's a cost effective prepaid mobile SIM I can get. I'm not expecting to make many calls, just the occasional "how do I get to $PLACE_WHERE_YOU_ARE?!" and it'd be nice to have a bit of data for tethering to my notebook where I can't get WiFi.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Henare

Hi,

I've not used it, but I'm told giffgaff.com is good.

A Three SIM from home will work on 3 UK at no charge whatsoever ('3
like home') - which is what I use travelling in from Ireland.

If that's not true, you can buy a 3 SIM in the UK for £1 - get £15 of
topup vouchers and buy the "All-in-one 15" add-on:

There are probably other options on other networks (which are: Orange,
Vodafone, O2) but I know that one's broadly cost-effective, though it
doesn't have a fabulous reputation for signal.

This assumes, in case it needs stating for anyone else:

* That your phone/device is not network-locked and
* That it supports UMTS/EDGE/HDSPA and has a SIM card slot. US-like
CDMA phones from North America are useless here
