Series Description:

Alaska in the Crosshairs: Climate, Arctic Environment, & the Resurgence of Nuclear Weapons

While much of the environmental movement has rightly been concerned with climate change, nuclear weapons are also of intense interest to the environment, a significant factor in change. The changes that are occurring in the Arctic today are outpacing our understanding of them. And the added pressure of military industrial infrastructure leads to instability in the Arctic. Alaskans need to be at the forefront of decision making that affects our state, people, and ways of life.

Program 1:

Alaska in the Crosshairs: Introduction  (30:00) Alaska is currently at the crossroads of climate change, Arctic transformation, and the resurgence of nuclear weapons. These highlights are selected from the 2-day conference on the topic and present a wide-range of thoughts, positions and ideas for action, presented by an expert mix of Alaskans and international policy researchers.

Thu. Sept. 11th, 8pm

Sat. Sept. 13th, 3pm

Program 2:

Alaska in the Crosshairs: “Project Chariot” and the Tikiagmiut perspective  (1:29:30)

Dan O’Neill, author of “The Firecracker Boys”, and the late Steve Oomittuk, of Point Hope/Tikiåaq, Alaska, discuss the history of the United States’ misadventures while attempting to bring an “Atoms for Peace” nuclear construction project to the far north, and the efforts of the people of Point Hope- and Alaska- to successfully derail the project.

Dear Friends,
The notice we received for KTOO showing "Alaska in the Crosshairs" references <the late Steve Oomittuk>.
He died 15 Dec 2024.  We are indebted to him for his dedicated work and leadership for a better world.
I’m copying the reference here and a few images I’ve found. (I hope they come through)
