Below is a message regarding the failure of the Senate to pass the
Cantwell Amendment that would have struck the Arctic drilling language
from the budget reconciliation.

Quoting Erik DuMont, National Field Director for the Alaska Wilderness
League...

"48-51, we held all the same Rs we've always had (Smith, Coleman,
McCain, Collins, Snowe, Chafee, DeWine). Corzine (NJ) is running for
governor and his election is next tuesday, so he was absent. Final
pasage on the Senate side still expected sometime later today, but
could slip to tomorrow."

Nothing has changed about the House schedule for voting on the budget
reconciliation next Thursday, November 10th. The House cannot have
amendments, so we won't have a Cantwell amendment version with that
vote...

Please have everyone you know contact their Congresspeople! Votes are
coming down very tight with party lines, so in just about every case,
Democrats are solid votes. But put all the pressure you can on elected
Republicans - and if you think they would be more inclined to vote
against the budget due to the $50 billion in cuts to Medicaid,
Medicare, education funding, Head Start program, school lunches,
Foodstamps, etc., than because of the Arctic drilling, hit them up on
that as well!

And if they say anything about cuts being necessary because of
Hurricane Katrina funding, please tell them that the $70 billion in tax
cuts that will impact 30,000 Americans should be where that money comes
from - not social services programs benefiting the needy!

Contact me with any questions!
