I previously had QuickBooks's Desktop 2017. I was tricked into upgrading to, first, the online version, and then to QuickBooks Desktop Plus. Once I realized it was going to cost $649 per year for a desktop subscription, I quickly tried to go back to my 2017 desktop version, which was free. They told me my data could not be demoted back to 2017 version since it was already upgraded during the above fiasco.

I am an independent contractor with a very small, one person operation. I do not use any of the online services offered by QuickBooks (like payroll, etc.), just the very basic off-line accounting features. They are about to charge me $649 for a one year subscription to use the basic software. Does any body have an option they can share with me on how to get around this?

As this requires asking for your personal data recollection and the Community is a public forum, I recommend contacting our support regarding the charge you're about to have. Our live support team can help you discuss and guide you on finding an adequate solution.

Furthermore, I suggest scanning this article that entails further guidelines for matching your upgraded company files with different versions of QBDT: Company file compatibility with QuickBooks Desktop when upgrading.

Your support is what caused this issue in the first place, tricking me into thinking it was mandatory to upgrade my desktop version of QB. It wasn't until I met with my CPA that I found out it was unnecessary to upgrade the software. I reached out to your so-called-support and they always tell me the same thing, TOO BAD. Their only option is to move to QB online or to go with the expensive OB Desktop Plus subscription.

I am looking for a loop hole or a solution that someone in the public forum might had hear about, outside of QB. You have a LARGE group of VERY unhappy customers, but you already know that. If there was an easy solution to getting away from QB, I would already have done it.

Did you find an alternative? I am a small business. One employee. Close to retiring. $649 is such a rip off. i never use their support. I don't use their payroll. In the old days my quickbooks 2003 ran for FREE for like 10 years.

It will stop getting updates and access to Support, Payroll Services, Online Banking and Online Backup. You will still have the Quickbooks Company Files but you will need to get a stand-alone license to keep working on Quickbooks without a subscription.

In December 2020, I bought a one-year license to Quickbooks Windows desktop. What happens this December when my subscription expires; will I simply be "locked out" until I renew my license or will I simply be unable to receive updates?

This thread may be old, but I just got hit with this. Quickbooks Pro 2021 will not run at all without a current subscription. I get a message that my subscription has lapsed and offered to restart my subscription.

You likely can see about exporting from the 2021 and import into 2020. Likely will lose stuff. And at this point if subscription ended, you have to find someoen else still using 2021 to open the data to export it.
