Hi guys,

From the last response until now was the time that I needed to put a simple ChicagoBoss application together which will help me to track the people who said they are coming.

Here is the URL to sign up: http://thejeeper.net:8010/signup/create

Enjoy!
Hope to see you soon in person.

—Kai
P.S.: I am going to add some more features to it, so, don't be surprised if there are brief blips of errors. It will be nice soon.

Hi group!

I am very humbled that we got 8 people thus far!

It will be my pleasure to have some hands-on material ready for the meeting.
I am planning, and this is open to suggestions at any time, to do something like this:
  • Functional programming in Erlang
  • Unit testing in Erlang (this is actually a fun thing to do, as weird as it sounds)
  • ChicagoBoss web framework (everyone who signed up saw the results of a quick project in ChicagoBoss)
  • Troubleshooting Erlang (Erlang comes with batteries included)
Since we are shooting for 10 people I'd say the session should last maybe 2 hours with a possible open end if wanted/needed.
I would hate to leave things unanswered.  As far as the location goes, I was hoping that AlamoCoders can still use NewHorizon's facilities,
Phil, Jasdeep?

If you have questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you all!

I really like the plan and would like to talk more about
multithreading and web development with Erlang.
Btw,
Kai, I got a confirmation email but it went to junk folder :)

Hi,

Multithreading is usually a term that goes together with imperative languages.  Functional languages, especially Erlang uses super lightweight processes instead.
The good thing is that these processes are light, easy and fast to spawn and destroy.

Be surprised how easy it is when you see it in action.

Web development with Erlang could be considered a natural symbiosis. Erlang was designed to be used in telecommunications where things can and do fail all the time.
Fault tolerance was one of the major ideas behind creating Erlang, so it's very resilient.

Hope that's a bit helpful and starts to make some sense … soon.

—Kai

Yeah, the email was sent from a "made-up-account" on my server which did not match the domain name; that has been fixed. :)

Kai;

Thanks for organizing this effort. We should be able to schedule new horizons for this talk. Also the good news is that we can have a sponsor who would be willing to bring some refreshments like pizza and drinks.

Let me know what you are thinking in terms of date and time. May I suggest starting no later than 545 pm if that's ok with everyone attending.

Hi Jas,

Thank you for letting me know.  I'd like to pick a date that almost all who signed up can attend.
Here is my observation from the past AlamoCoders meetings; we had on a weekday afternoon and only a few people showed.

Being burnt by this myself, I turn around an ask the people who signed up, what would be the best day and the best time window?

Personally, I would not mind a Saturday either, but I recall that NewHorizons might be closed.

So, one more round on the time and date and we can get cranking Erlang and ChicagoBoss!

Thank you all!

As I stated previously, I will be meeting up with a few people at
Local Coffee over on stone Oak on Friday around 7pm if you guys want
to get together there and discuss it.

I have an interview at Lackland AFB at 3:30pm for a low-level help
desk position (I'm still looking for an entry-level programming
position). The interview also includes filling out a top secret
clearance packet, but I don't think that should cause me to be late.

Hi everyone!

Number 10 just signed up!

That means I'll be scheduling a meeting with the help of Jas and or Phil (the other two directors of the AlamoCoders) and
get the ball rolling!

Thank you very much for everyone who signed up.

The registration will remain open until the minute the meeting starts.
Make sure you sign up, so we know how many pizzas we need to get for you all!

Thank you for making me believe that we can do something like this.
The Austin Erlang Group has usually 5 − 7 attendees, let's see that we can beat that!

Kai,

I will also sign up. I went to a couple of meetings you had last year.
Will you be using a similar format that you were trying then with
attendees working with the tools on their laptops? if so, can you
provide system requirements in advance?

Thanks,

Hi Brian,

Yes, it will be similar and I will release the needed tools before the meeting.

Basically I am asking for a laptop that has about 10GB space free on its hard disk and VirtualBox preinstalled.
I love the batteries-included approach and so there will be no surprise when we meet.

We will focus on what we can do with it, rather than setting it up.
This is about programming, not systems administration.

For the folks who like to give it a head start and use their own native installation
(which is fine by me, but you're on your own if something doesn't work on meeting day)
here is what you need:

A working Erlang R15B release (or R140X is fine, too) and the ChicagoBoss latest version.
Furthermore an editor your familiar with and can do what's needed to modify and create
Erlang sources.

That's it.  If I can think of anything else, I'll post it later and let you all know where the information is.

Also, if we want to use Geekdom I have access to the space.

Well whatever we do, lets not lose this momentum and let things die
back out. Personally, I'm a creature of habit and thrive on
consistency, so if we had a meeting every Monday from say 8pm -9pm, I
would always show.

Hi Guys,

So, here is the update:
  • Currently I am working on the course material
  • I am looking into dates for the meeting

Since we are facing a challenge that some people can only come after a certain hour
and other people can only come on certain days, I am willing to hold two classes with the
same material to cover all bases.  That would probably the only solution that works for everybody.

The only concern I have is that we do that and then the attendance is going to be very little.
Should that be the case that people who said that they are coming and then do not show,
then I would think the logical consequence from that would be that speakers are going to be
very discouraged in the future to pull something like this together.

So, I'll find out early next week when we can have the room(s) and when the event is going to be.
It will be shortly, so please be prepared for a "short notice announcement".

Alright everyone,

put your helmets on, we got a room!

The first meeting will be at The Castle (Rackspace Headquarters, that is).

on Friday, Feb 10th, opening the doors from 5:30pm to 9:00pm (that should give us enough time for everything).
The room has a projector and white boards, that should cover all needs.

The address is:

5000 Walzem Road
San Antonio, TX 78218

The meeting room is called

"The Gaggle" Room Number is 2684

Since The Castle is such a vast place, I'd like to meet you at the front door for your visitor badges.
Please printout this email and take it with you, so that the friendly security guards can lead you into the correct room.

—Kai

P.S.> The next meeting shall take place after Valentines day.  Same material, nobody will miss a thing.  People who want to attend again are welcome, too.  Just please let me know who's coming in case we are more than before… Just saying.

Hi guys,

Again thank you all for coming! I am humbled that so many came and
stayed And hopefully learned something and had fun.

Seen from my side, I've learned where I can improve to make the
seasons more effective as we go. Every time will be a learning
process, one way or another and I am grateful that I can be part of
it.

The next meeting will come and I'd be happy to see more people
adopting the provided vm so that we can eliminate differences in
setup, use and side effects. Just a thought.

I am sorry that some people had a hard time following but I am sure
that that is just the beginning pain that I am trying to teach you how
to overcome it. Fun(s) after that. :)

I will also focus on the basic syntax of an Erlang program, since
that's kind of essential to make the learning experience a good and
lasting one.

All the best,

Unfortunately, my biggest issue was in trying to learn too many languages to quickly. I have only 8 months of C# and 2 months of Java desktop application programming, so trying to go from there to a whole new client-server language is just too much for me to follow at this point in time. In short, I lack the experience.

I was, and still am, grateful to the mods, RackSpace, and all involved in setting that evening up. Many thanks.

Hi Josh,

I am glad that you're experience in imperative languages is that brief.  That makes you a good candidate for wrapping your head around a functional
language such as Erlang in no time.  I bet that many OOP(rogrammers) would love to be able to shake their "old, OOP style" off and start over, fresh.

Don't give up on something as exciting as Erlang and enthusiastically growing ChicagoBoss community.

Hang in there, the rewards will be sky high!
