Historically, nonprofits have gotten nearly a third of their charitable donations just during the month of December. In recent years, this flurry of giving has begun on #GivingTuesday, an online campaign that takes place on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. We asked Erica Mills Barnhart, a University of Washington nonprofits scholar, to explain how nonprofits are holding up amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic distress it has caused, as well as why everyone with money to spare should consider giving some of it away now.

Despite record amounts of charitable donations this year, the effects of the pandemic are suffocating nonprofits across the country as organizations face soaring costs and demand for help, yet are largely without their own support systems, including volunteers and in-person fundraising events.

The mass cancellation of annual galas and other fundraising events, alongside the moratoriums on live music, theater and sports, has deprived nonprofits of the donations and ticket-sales revenue that keep them afloat, leaving thousands unemployed. And with donations flowing into emergency Covid relief, charities that provide essential services to the vulnerable are left struggling with increased demand at a time of decreased funding.

This homeless shelter in Bloomington, Ind., is emblematic of the challenges facing housing nonprofits, which in many cases were overstretched before the pandemic. As more people lose their jobs, demand increases at shelters, which are simultaneously being forced to restrict services to comply with social- distancing mandates. The result is a rise in people living on the street. Most shelters are single-sex, but New Hope houses entire families rather than splitting them up, the only shelter in the area to provide this service. The National Coalition for the Homeless has listings of local shelters to support and takes donations.

Between that increased cost, the uptick in families needing help, and a lack of funding, many nonprofit organizations that normally provide back to school supplies for the community said they're struggling to keep up.

Denver7 features the stories of people who need help and now you can help them with a cash donation through Denver7 Gives. One hundred percent of contributions to the fund will be used to help people in our local community.

In addition, to help nonprofits grappling with the operational aspects of the workforce shortages, we published a series of articles describing creative approaches that can elevate equity, address burnout and stress, and discover, nurture, and develop talent in nontraditional ways.

Federal aid money helped Emmaus to pay increased overtime costs, plus $2 an hour extra in hazard pay, Jacobsen said. And she noted that the nonprofit has raised its starting wage from about $13 to $15. She acknowledged that the new rate hardly competes with entry-level pay in the food service sector, and she said that like most of her industry, her organization still cannot absorb the full demand for either its in-home or on-site services.

Mission Clean Water works differently to develop long-term solutions by starting at a grassroots level. Their solutions are implemented together to ensure the longevity of the project after their technical teams move on. Their focus is on isolated communities that have been historically underserved, but are in arid climates with some of the most pressing need for clean water access. This clean water serves as drinking water and helps with their established sanitation solutions.

They have partnered with moreover 800 communities in Africa, providing life-saving water and health needs for over 500,000 people in 13 different countries. Along the way, their 1000 Wells Project has expanded to include a variety of clean water solutions and sanitation and hygiene training, as well as funding health clinics, community health workers, and support groups, which help in the prevention, treatment, care, and support of communities affected by AIDS, incorporating HIV/AIDS-specific programming alongside ongoing water programming.

They have field offices around the world that, together with local partners, help communities access clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene. These sanitation solutions have a life-changing effect on those they help.

The challenge is being felt across a wide range of nonprofits, including those related to the arts and education, with half of the charities saying in May that they expected donations to fall by at least 20% in the next 12 months, according to a survey by the Charities Aid Foundation of America.

In East Darfur, women and girls still largely earn a living through agriculture, working hard on land owned by their families to produce food and cash crops. Yet they often see few of the proceeds when crops are sold. Their agricultural fortunes have begun to change through a CARE Sudan program which helps women establish vegetable gardens for both food and income, and has also assisted herders with veterinary care.

It is inequitable. The people most affected are the staff who are paid lowest and have least seniority, and they are more likely to be from marginalized communities: people of color, people with disabilities, etc. We take it for granted that what is easy for us may be a hardship for someone else. I remember what it was like as an AmeriCorps member struggling to pay the bills. Sure, a $5 donation may not seem like much of a burden, but when you combine it with dozens of other expenses, it adds up and disproportionately punishes people from marginalized communities.

Because individual donations are often small and take a lot of resources to generate. Plus, when economic uncertainty hits, your revenue can dry up fast, as happened with many nonprofits during the COVID pandemic.

There are many benefits to partnering with FRN, but the first and foremost is regular fresh food donations. Recovered food varies depending on the donor and the community; hunger-fighting partners and FRN student chapters should discuss the details of these exchanges together.

It can be helpful to have a designated individual or team responsible for overseeing donor retention efforts, tracking retention rates, and implementing strategies to improve retention. This team can work with other departments, such as marketing and development, to ensure that donor retention is a priority throughout your organization.
