A couple of years ago I bought some painter's putty to fill some wood and found
that it does not solidify, but remains soft. I wanted a hardening filler, so I
stowed it with my other beddings and fillers, including my ever-present three
cans of Dolfinite (one for each color: natural, white and mahogany). I then
bought some DryDek which nicely serves as a wood filler that hardens and can be
sanded and painted.

Dolfinite as most of us know was used in the original construction of the
Alajuelas and is highly recommended by Rod. Its greatest virtue over other
bedding compounds being that it is so easily cleaned up - and being so, was
liberally applied by the construction crew. I have had great results with it.

Now to the current coincidence. I had need to temporarily bed an item for
fitting and aesthetic review. I didn't want to use Dolfinite, because it is a
bit pricey. I thought about the painter's putty. It, too, doesn't harden and is
easily cleaned up. So, I got it out and it served the purpose nicely. Then I
noticed:

Painter's putty looks like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty smells like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty feels like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty, when it sits in the can, develops a oil-like fluid on its top
like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty spreads like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty stays flexible like Dolfinite.
Painter's putty cleans up like Dolfinite.

So, my question: is painter's putty Dolfinite, but at one-fourth the price?

Hi Carl,
I did a quick search and looked up the Material Safety Data Sheets on 3 painter's puttys and dolfinite. The PP's have Linseed oil and calcium carbonate as ingredients and the Dolfinte is xylene, silicon dioxide crystals and mineral spirits.

Additionally, the PP instructions say they skim over in a couple of hours and harden in 7 to 14 days. -Sounds different to me.

Ooh, ooh- the ups man just delivered my t-4 500 and SWR meter! Fun this weekend!

Merry Christmas,
Dennis and Kaffie

Thank you Pierce,
I think geek is one level above nerd. That's good. I was content with egghead but Kaffie tells me none of those terms apply when rum is applied. Since rum is a religious experience, perhaps it should be friar- or frere. Oh brother, It'd take a geek to figure it out!
Cheers- the religious kind,
Dennis

I must also express a trend toward ‘geekness’. I still have a circular slide rule that is in a small wooden box with a sign on it’ in case of power failure-break glass’.

I admit to "geek". I don't care what the MSDS says. I'm buying a bag full of painter's putty.

Oh yes, I won the county-wide slide rule competition while a junior in high school.
