Hi Sam,
I have a 1976 Alajuela . When I bought the boat the forward tank had been replaced, but the aft tank had been removed. The original tanks were 40 gallons.  I bought a 35 gallon bladder tank and installed it where the rear tank had been. I lost 5 gallons of capacity, but it was an easy and affordable installation. Then I sailed around the world. I still have the boat and both tanks are still ok and I installed the bladder tank in 1998.
  Good luck,

HI All,
I think I need to replace my water tanks as one of them has sprung a leak. The main indication is water in the bilge while filling the tanks, I think the leak is probably a failed weld at or near the top. After filling the tanks about 4g or so accumulates the main bilge then stops. My initial thought is to pull the tanks and get copies fabricated. The originals did last almost 50 years after all. This looks like a huge and expensive job. Has anyone here done this before? Any tips or advice?
Thanks,
Sam

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the info. I think my boat had a slightly different layout as I have 100 gallons of factory installed tankage (40 gallons in the forward tank and 60 in the aft tank). One potential option is for me is ti cut the tops of the tanks off and install bladders but this is not my preferred route. Though it is good to you have good success with a similar installation.
Thanks,
Sam
