Hello all,

I’m moving coasts and it’s time to get our Alajuela 33, Mollymawk, on to the next owner. If you’re near New Bern, NC, and interested in a new project (details below), this may be a good option for you. Given her state as a project boat with a good hull and engine that’s only a few years old, I’m offering Mollymawk for $2,500 or best offer in the hopes someone may want to take her on and restore her the rest of the way. That’s about what I paid back when I started the project and I figure you just write off the time and treasure you put into boats and hope the next person appreciates whatever work you’ve done.

We refitted Mollymawk back to coastal motoring capabilities (though never got her back to full blue water capacity) a few years ago. We put new thru-hulls and seacocks on board, as well as a brand new engine (a Barrus workboat variant of the Yanmar 3-cylinder 30 HP) and enjoyed traveling the coastal Carolinas in 2022. As often happens with project boats though, life got in the way and after a couple busier years we’re now moving out to the west coast. So it’s time to part with this chapter of our life and this particular boat.

We motored Mollymawk to a local boat yard at the start of July with the hopes of doing some of the needed repairs in advance of sale, but time has run out and I need to focus on the move. Right now, she’s on the hard with the mast unstepped. The hull’s in good shape as I said, but she’s a true project boat: standing rigging is in need of replacing and the bowsprit has rotted where it slips through the gunwale and water gets trapped easily. The compression post needs repairs or replacing, though I’ve talked to machine shops in the area that feel up to the task. The thru-hulls and seacocks are only a few years old, but we fell for 3M’s advertising of their “new and improved” sealant that turned out to be less reliable than the old stuff, so I’d recommend unseating and reseating the thru-hulls with new sealant before setting off on any grand adventure. Those are the major refit tasks as I see them.

Like I said, she’s a project boat and needs significant work again. I’m happy to chat with anyone interested and answer questions before coordinating a chance to see the boat in person, just reach out and we can set up a time to chat. As y’all know, these are beautiful boats and I’d also be happy to negotiate on price with the right person who wanted to make good use of her.

Cheers,

Hazel
