Major Shirk Part 2

As we previously mentioned Major Shirk is divided in to the following
categories:
 Shirk in calling
 Shirk of intention
 Shirk in following
 Shirk in love
In this issue we continue with the second type:
(2) Shirk of intention. This is the type of association with Allaah in
which a worshipper of Allaah or a Muslim does all his worship only for
the pleasure of others. For example he prays or fasts for the sole
purpose of making the people pleased with him.
The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day
of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought
and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize
them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will
say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have
lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is
courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged
along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a
man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who
used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known
to his His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will
say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied
[religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your
sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but study [religious]
knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you
recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And
so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his
face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom
Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He
will be brought and Allah will make known to his His favours and he
will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do
about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like
money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will say:
You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is
open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be
dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Sahih
Muslim]
Also Allah Says in Surah Hood 15-16:
مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْحَيَاةَ
الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ
إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَالَهُمْ فِيهَا
وَهُمْ فِيهَا لاَ يُبْخَسُونَ
15 Whosoever desires the life of the world and its glitter; to them We
shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds therein, and they will
have no diminution therein.
16 They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire;
and vain are the deeds they did therein. And of no effect is that which
they used to do.
The Islamic Scholar Ibn Qayyim al Jawzee said: “As for Shirk in
intention, this is an ocean that has no end to it and only a small
amount of people are saved from it. Whoever wants by every single one
of his actions other than getting closer to Allaah and intends by it
not becoming closer to him has made partnership in his intention. As
for the one who in some of his actions does not intend the face of
Allaah or that his action has some of this type of Shirk then he
isn’t out of the Religion of Islaam.
(3) Shirk in following. Allaah said in at-Tawbah 31:
اتَّخَذُواْ أَحْبَارَهُمْ
وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ
اللّهِ وَالْمَسِيحَ ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ
وَمَا أُمِرُواْ إِلاَّ لِيَعْبُدُواْ
إِلَـهًا وَاحِدًا لاَّ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ
هُوَ سُبْحَانَهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be
their lords besides Allah (by obeying them in things which they made
lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered
by Allah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Mary,
while they were commanded to worship none but One Ilah (Allah) none has
the right to be worshipped but He. Praise and glory be to Him, (far
above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)."
To explain this ayah there is a hadeeth in Tirmidhee that `Alee ibn
Haatim heard [the previously mentioned verse] and he said that ‘We
don’t worship them!’ Then the Prophet (صلي الله عليه و
سلم) asked him, “Don’t they make haraam what Allaah has made
halaal so you make it haraam, and don’t they make halaal what Allaah
has made haraam so you make it halaal?” He said: “Yes”, then the
Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said, “This is
worshipping them”. And to explain this hadeeth further, if one knows
that a scholar or shaykh has changed the religion of Allaah but still
follows that shaykh or scholar with the belief that the shaykh or
scholar is correct then this is kufr.
But if the person knows the shaykh or scholar has changed the religion
and follows him but does not believe that he is correct then he is a
sinner.
(4) Shirk in love. Allaah said in 2:175:
Those are they who have purchased error at the price of Guidance, and
torment at the price of Forgiveness. So how bold they are (for evil
deeds which will push them) to the Fire.
and Allaah said in Surah Az-Zumar 45.
And when Allah Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not
in the Hereafter are filled with disgust and when those (whom they
obey or worship) besides Him are mentioned, behold, they rejoice!
Ibn Qayyim al Jawzee said: “There are four categories of love and it
is essential to differentiate between them and whoever has gone astray
was because he didn’t categorise them.”
[1] Love for Allaah.
This is not enough to save someone from the punishment of Allaah and to
bring one amongst those who get his favours, for verily the idol
worshippers, the cross worshippers and the Jews and other than them
love Allaah.
[2] Love for that which Allaah loves. This is what enters a person into
Islaam, and takes him out of the hell fire and the most loved person to
Allaah is the one who is strongest in this type of love.
[3] Love for the sake of Allaah.
This categorises itself from loving what Allaah loves and love will not
be complete except if one loves for him.
[4] Love with Allaah.
This is the type of love that brings one into Shirk, and whoever loves
something with Allaah, not for Allaah, has taken a creature other than
Allaah as worship (of course this is in the case of worship, e.g. what
the Christians do in loving Jesus with Allaah and not because Allaah
has ordered us to love him and this led to their going astray). ■
