Issue#1
In the first publication of this newsletter I would like the first
topic to be one which all the Messengers from Noah (عليه سلم)
to Muhammad (صلي الله عليه و سلم) started with, which is
affirming to the oneness of Allah or At-Tawheed.
Now this is a topic which unfortunately many Muslims are ignorant of
due to the lack of emphasis on it, thinking that just saying La ilaha
ill Allah (ﻻﺍﻟﻪﺍﻻالله) will suffice without
understanding what this kalimah means.
Many think that La ilaha ill Allah (ﻻﺍﻟﻪﺍﻻالله) means
that there is no God but Allah. The statement that there is no God but
Allah is correct knowing that there is no creator, sustainer, protector
except Allah. However we must bear in mind that the Polytheists also
believed this (Allah is the creator, sustainer, protector etc).
And the evidence for this is what Allah said in Surah Yunus verse 31:
“Say (O Muhammad): ‘Who provides for you from the sky and from the
earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living
from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes
the affairs?’ They will say: ‘Allah.’ Say: ‘Will you not then
be afraid of Allah's Punishment (for setting up rivals in worship with
Allah)?’”
As we know the Prophet (صلي الله عليه و سلم) said in a
sound hadeeth narrated in both Bukhari and Muslim “I have been
ordered to fight all people until they say ‘La ilaha ill Allah’”.
Upon knowing this authentic hadeeth it impresses in the mind that La
ilaha ill Allah cannot mean that there is no God but Allah, because if
so, why did Muhammad (صلي الله عليه و سلم) fight the
Polytheists?
Hence there must be an alternate meaning to La ilaha ill Allah. And we
have discovered that the meaning that most people attach to this
kalimah is incorrect. To find the correct meaning we must look in to
the evidences of the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
Allah has said in the Qur’an “This is because Allah is deserving of
worship, and whatever else you worship is false”.
Subhan Allah! Hence from this verse we conclude that La ilaha ill Allah
means that there is nothing deserving of worship except Allah.
One may ask: ‘Why does Allah deserve to be worshipped alone?’ We
answer because He is The Creator of the heavens and the earth and
everything in between it. Hence The Creator of all things deserves to
be worshipped because there is no creator (of the heavens and earth)
except Him.
Allah tells us that there is no god but He, and that no one else should
be worshipped except Him, alone, without partners, for He is the
Sovereign, Creator, and Lord of all things.
Allah Says in Surah An-Nahl:
وَلَهُ الدِّينُ وَاصِبًا
His is the religion Wasiba
[Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Maymun bin Mahran, As-Suddi, Qatadah
and others said that this means forever. It was also reported that Ibn
`Abbas said, "It means obligatory.'' Mujahid said: "It means purely for
Him,'' i.e., worship is due to Him Alone, from whoever is in the
heavens and on earth.]
One may also ask: ‘Why are all other things not to be worshipped?’
I ask a question to that question. Has Jesus, Krishna, Buddha or
whoever else created anything else? Or are they creators themselves?
As Allah said in Surah Tur Ayaat 35 and 36:
أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ
هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ
Or were they created out of naught? Or are they the creators?
Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they are sure of
nothing!
And seeing that these beings have not created anything, why worship
them when you can worship The One who created all things, including
these beings you worship?
Hence we Muslims say due to the fact that Allah is The Only Creator,
Owner and Arranger of All Matters in the heavens and earth, we must
conclude that He alone must be worshipped, as there is not a being to
share these titles with.
In conclusion I end with ayah 21 and 22 in Surah Baqarah. We must note
well that in these ayaat Allah did not call the believers alone, but He
called all of Mankind to worship Him alone, giving evidences as to why
he alone should be singled out in this worship.
“O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who
were before you so that you may become pious”
“Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a
canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth
therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto
Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be
worshipped).”■
