"This practise was not done neither by the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa
sallam) nor his companions (radiallaho anhum) and it was not done by
any of the salaf at all neither as the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa
sallam) died, nor a week, a month or a year after his that, but this
is from the innovations and from the customs that are evil that the old
Egyptians (before Islam) and other than them from the Kuffar. Hence one
must advise the Muslim who do this action and to make it disliked to
them and it is hoped that they return to Allah and stay away from
innovating in the religion and imitating the Kuffar, and the Prophet
(Salallahu alaihi wa sallam ) said in an authentic Hadeeth: "I came
with the sword within the hour until Allah is worshipped as one without
any partner. And my provision was made to be under the shade of my
spear. And humiliation has been give for those who oppose my orders and
whoever imitates a people he is of them." Narrated by Imam Ahmad in his
Musnad on the Authority of Ibn 'Umar.
And Haakim has narrated on the Authority of Ibn 'Abbas (Radiallahi
anhu) that the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) siad: "You will
follow the way of those before you inch by inch and handspan by
handspan until if anyone of them (the Kuffar) were to enter a lizard's
hole you would enter it."... .
Reading Qur'an for the Dead
Shaikh Ibn Baaz was asked about this and he said:
"This action and the likes of it has no basis whatsoever and it has not
been memorised from the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) or his
companions (Radiallaho anhum) that they used to read Qur'an for the
dead. Yet the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) said : "Whoever does
an action which is not from our actions it is rejected" Narrated by
Bukhari and Muslim. And in the two Saheeh Hadeeth Books (Bukhari and
Muslim) on the authority of Aisha (radiallaho anha) the Prophet
(Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) said : "Whoever inovates in this action of
ours it is rejected." And in Saheeh Muslim on the authority of Jaabir
(radiallaho anhu) the Prophet (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam) used to say
in his sermons on the day of Juma'ah: "And I proceed. For verily the
best of speech is the book of Allah and the best of guidance in the
guidance of Muhammad (Salallahu alaihi wa sallam), and the most evil of
affairs are newly invented matters and every innovation is
misguidance." and in a chain of narration in Nasa;i: "And every
Misguidance is in the Hellfire" As for the charity of the dead and
making du'a for them this benefits them and reaches them according to
the consensus of the Muslims. May Allah guide all of us. And I seek
Allah's aid."
