Assalamo Alaikom In 2015, the management of
the Grand Kūfa Mosque decided to invite
two dignitaries, one from the United States and one from the United Kingdom, to
cover the Arba`een somber anniversary of Imām al-Hussain alaihis-salam. The
first is my dear friend, Dr. Abdulaziz Sachedina, and the other was Mr. Patrick
Cockburn, famous correspondent for The Independent newspaper whom I met for the
first time. My task was to simultaneously interpret the talks between these two dignitaries
and other prominent religious and military leaders in Iraq as well as the public. The
attachment to this email provides you with more details. This visit by invitation of
these two dignitaries prompted me to write about the Grand Kūfa Mosque and to let it be a Supplement to my
book titled A Pictorial Tour of Imām Ali’s Shrine in Arabic, English and
Chinese, one of my very best, thus letting the total number of the pages of the latter title reach
480, the maximum then published in color by CreateSpace which no longer exists.
I hope you will enjoy reading this Supplement and will share it with others who
appreciate it. Not all people appreciate scholarship. Some people do not know
what scholarship is, and I do not write for such folks, I simply ignore them. It is not out of place here
to state that the Grand Kūfa Mosque is
the place where Commander of the Faithful Ali alaihis-salam ruled the Islamic
world, moving the capital from Medina to Kūfa. What is so particular about
Kūfa? It is the place where Prophet Noah alaihis-salam built his ark. If you go
to the said Mosque, you will see in its midst the place where the tannoor, to
which the Holy Qur’an refers, is located. It is the place from which the earth started
emptying its underground waters, signaling the start of the great deluge. The Grand Kūfa Mosque is also
the place where Imām Ali alaihis-salam was martyred, and you can go and see the
exact spot where this incident took place. When Ali alaihis-salam was martyred
at the Grand Kūfa Mosque, people in the Levant kept asking each other if Ali
alaihis-salam really went to a mosque, if he really performed the prayer
ritual…! They were brainwashed by the derogatory publicity and countless lies promoted and funded,
enforced and imposed, by Ali’s arch enemy, Mu`awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan. This is
why I have chosen the text below in Arabic and English which testifies to the
extent of hatred Mu`awiyah harbored against Commander of the Faithful Ali
alaihis-salam who was, in every respect and in every merit, next only to the Holy Prophet of Islam (P). The
jealousy of some sahāba filled their hearts with hatred towards Ali
alaihis-salam…
Cursing Ali alaihis-salam during the time of Mu`awiyah As evidenced by hadīth
and historic testimonies, Mu`awiyah could never hide his grudge and animosity
towards the Commander of the Faithful alaihis-salam, cursing and belittling
him, as one of the means of expressing such grudge and animosity. Yet he was
not satisfied with doing all of this; rather, he used to order the Muslims to
curse him, to taunt him, calling upon them to follow his (Mu`awyah’s) example
(in expressing such hatred towards the man who was next only to the Prophet of
Islam (ص)
in everything, his wasi and right hand). Mu`awiya cursing the Commander of the Faithful alaihis-salam
according to Sahih ahādīth According to the hadīth
of Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas In his Sahih, relying on
the isnād of `Amir son of Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas who quotes his father,
Muslim says, “Mu`awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan summoned Sa`d (ibn Abi Waqqas) and asked
him, ‘What prevented you from cursing Abu Turab (Imām Ali alaihis-salam, the
father of dust)?’ He said, ‘It is as I stated: three things the Messenger of
Allah (P) said to him; therefore, I will never curse him. Had I had one of them
(merits), it would have been dearer to me than the best of highly coveted
animals: 1) I heard the Messenger of Allah (P) leaving Ali (in charge) during
some of his military campaigns, so Ali said to him, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Do
you thus leave me behind with the women and children?’ The Messenger of Allah
(P), therefore, said to him, ‘Are you not pleased that your status with me is
like that of Aaron with Moses save there will be no Prophet after me?’ 2) And I
heard him (P) during the Battle of Khaybar saying, ‘I will give the standard to
a man who loves Allah and His Messenger and who is loved by Allah and His
Messenger,’ so we all coveted it. He (P) said, ‘Summon Ali for me.’ He (Ali)
was brought to him (P), and he was arthritic (he had an eye
ailment). He (P) spitted in his eye and gave him the standard, whereupon Allah
granted him victory. 3) And when this verse was revealed: Come let us call
our sons and your sons…, the Messenger of Allah (P) called Ali, Fātima,
al-Hassan and al-Hussain then said, ‘O Allah! These are my family members,’” as
recorded by al-Naisapuri, Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, on p. 120, Vol. 7, of Muslim’s
Sahih, and also by al-Tirmithi on p. 301, Vol. 5 of his Sunah. Al-Tirmithi
commented on this hadīth saying, “This is a good and authentic hadīth, unusual,
though, in this regard.” This hadīth, which is
regarded as authentic according to the rules set by the Sunnis because it is
recorded in Muslim’s Sahih, clearly indicates that Mu`awiyah ordered the
sahabi Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas to curse the Commander of the Faithful alaihis-salam
who expressed his astonishment because he (Sa`d) did not obey this order. It also carries a
clearly implicit evidence that Mu`awiyah was among those who used to curse Ali
alaihis-salam. So, one who orders such cursing is not seen as unusual of him if
he curses and taunts Ali alaihis-salam. This is supported by Ibn Majah who
narrates this same hadīth. Ibn Taymiyyah admits this hadīth Ibn Taymiyyah admits this hadīth
saying that Mu`awiyah ordered the cursing of Ali alaihis-salam. He said, “As
regarding the hadīth of Sa`d (ibn Abi Waqqas) when he refused to obey the order
of Mu`awiyah to curse Ali, so he said to him, ‘What prevented you from cursing
Ali ibn Abu Tālib?’, he said, ‘Three statements said by the Messenger of Allah
(P) did so; therefore, I will never curse him. Had I had (in me) one of them,
it would have been dearer to me than the most coveted animals.’ This hadīth is
authentic, it is narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.” Wassalamo Alaikom Yasin T. al-Jibouri If you live in or near Turkey, click on the Link below so you may be able to order Online some of my books which Turkey's Amazon portal is now marketing; a right mouse click changes the portal's language for you from Turkish to English or vice versa, and shipping is available: https://www.amazon.com.tr/s?k=Yasin+al-Jibouri&i=stripbooks&__mk_tr_TR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
