One other note, I love high-end ceramic tile and have many times before worked with Fireclay tile, when the budget allows and it is 100% worth the added expense. That being said, not all projects have the budget for high-end tile, hence the below list!
Fireclay is one of my all time fave sources for ceramic tile (seen in my bathroom here and kitchen here), and they just released a new collection of $10 Essentials tiles that are really beautiful and available in both a 36 and 39 on quick ship!
I have ordered from Cemento Collection previously and had good experiences with sourcing budget-friendly ceramic (and cement) tiles. A few faves include this glossy emerald brick style for $10/square foot, and a light grey 28 tile.
The Tile Shop has a pretty wide range of colours in their ceramic tile, as well as a few sizes. The longer tile is a bit larger than I typically like (412), but they do sell a good variety of trim pieces, which helps a lot to create a custom look. Also, the price is good at $7 a square/foot. Two fave colours (that I have samples for) are gunmetal and slate blue.
I added Artistic Tile to the list, even though their ceramic tiles are a bit over the $10/square foot threshold because they are a very beautiful option. I love the A Train 210 field tile in Indigo and Azul, and the more handmade looking B Train Field Tile in the same colours. There are some black and white options that are at the $8/square foot range.
The Cloe tile has been very popular for a few years, but with good reason. I especially like the Cloe in the blue and green colourways. Bedrosians carries some other ceramic tiles, but I do find that they tend to be larger than I prefer.
Bring artisanal character to your walls and floors with perfectly imperfect handmade-look ceramic and porcelain tiles. Featuring uneven surface texture and stunning color variation, these unique tiles evoke the one-of-a-kind beauty of handcrafted tiles.
What Is Handmade-Look Tile? As its name implies, handmade-look tile is mass-produced tile that approximates the perfectly imperfect artisanal look of true handmade tiles. It offers much of the same variation (in surface texture, glazing and color) of handmade tile, but is typically more affordable. In some cases, handmade-look tile may also utilize materials that offer additional durability for use in spaces where true handmade tiles would typically not be used.
As materials, ceramic and porcelain are both hard enough to withstand use on floors, and look beautiful on walls. However, the surface variations that make handmade-look tiles so uniquely beautiful on walls mean that they may not be even enough to provide a safe walking surface. Always check the product details to confirm whether your favorite tiles are rated for use on walls, floors or both.
Measuring your space can be tricky. Remember to calculate overage so you don't run out of tile for your project. When you're finished, simply return any unopened boxes of excess tile with our return policy.
My friends Kim & Scott used a colored subway tile for the backsplash in their treehouse kitchen and the result is stunning! I love the warm gray hue that is still neutral and classic- yet inviting. Using a colored subway tile immediately feels updated and modern.
Sarah, I think you have chosen great photos as examples of classic tile. Tile can be enduring with good choices and quality installation. Our first house, a Cape Cod built in the 40s, had original tile in the bathroom and original floor tile to complement the wall tile and trim! The owners had remodeled other rooms and said the bathroom was next on the list. I was so glad they left the bathroom alone! And when we sold, the new owners were as appreciative as we were. Interesting that Cincinnati is on your list. I know that Cincinnati was a center for pottery arts in the first part of the last century, so it would follow that they might have some great examples of tile in homes there, probably hand made too.
I found many alternatives but none that even remotely compared to the raw edge, overall style, and size of zellige tiles. Except for one. This hidden gem tile is beautiful and available at your local hardware store. Can you even believe that?! Find the Jeffrey Court Cotton Blossom tile here.
This tile would look amazing laid so many ways, but I chose to run them vertical. We did use a laser level to keep our lines straight and level, but we chose not to use spacers. I love the organic edges and wanted to keep this raw look. It definitely makes the tile so much of what it is. We butted each tile up against each other and followed the laser level line. After, we used a white grout for a clean, simple finish.
The tool requires to be connected to the internet in order to download products from the Tilelook product library. If an internet connection is missing or there is some connection problem to wwww.tilelook.com then the program runs in "offline mode": you will be able to work with it normally but won't be able to download or upload resources.
Tilelook's Design Tool uses the render engine "Corona Render" which is 100% CPU-based, this means that the speed of the rendering process is determined only by the performance of the CPU. The Design Tool also allows you to perform photo-realistic renders in the cloud: a dedicated server with high processing power suitable for rendering at much higher speed. If you don't have a computer with high performance CPU you can take advantage of the cloud rendering option.
And this is how it looked the next morning! I actually love the subtle cloudiness and veining. I think it gives the tile a softer, more natural look which is exactly what I was hoping for. And the herringbone pattern is definitely more noticeable!
With the SpreadStone product, they used a tape method to tape off squares which gives the illusion of real stone tile. Sign me up! I knew it would probably be labor intensive, but I was willing to give it a try and see what I could do to our patio, so I wrote them back and told them about my project, that I was looking for a product that would give me a tile look back there. We chatted back and forth, I told them the size of my patio, the color I had chosen in SpreadStone (Lake Rock) and Daich shipped out the product to me on a big pallet. It was huge and took a freight company to get it to my door from Canada, where Daich is located.
So next I used Mud Gray, the 2nd accent color using the same method with the faux roller. It has a muddy brown tone and really smushes all the colors together giving it more of a real stone look. The roller has those little tails on it that move the paint around and gives it that stone look.
I loved it already just from this look and knew that once the tape came up it would look great. The 2nd color really gives it more depth and a little more brown tone which I love because it goes well with our siding color.
With this porcelain tile, you get the look of worn or reclaimed wood with the popular, modern herringbone pattern. As a porcelain tile, it's easier to clean and maintain than a natural wood floor and will remain relatively unchanged over time. This is a perfect material for creating visual interest in your home or business.
Every time I try to use look, it skips every other tile if I move the cursor in a cardinal direction. So if something is directly adjacent to me, or 3 tiles away etc. I have to use my mouse to select it. It's not the end of the world but it's very frustrating. Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

I eventually carried them all inside so I could get a better idea of how they would look in our space and the lighting. From the start, I knew which one I wanted but had to give them all a fair chance.
I kept coming back to my top two choices so I brought them into the kitchen separately to see how they looked against the cabinets. I also kept each one in the same spot for a full day so I could see how the different light affected them. I did a poll on my instagram and it was close but the winner was Treverkchic.
Marazzi has such a huge selection of wood look tile and other products perfect for any renovation. I love how neutral Treverkchic is and think it would look beautiful paired with Hawthorne
I love the tile design that you chose! It is indeed very neat and sophisticated looking. Your post literally inspired me to check and look for this kind of tiles for my own home. Thank you for sharing this!
These floors are beautiful. They really look like wood! What spacing and grout color would you recommend to achieve a natural wood floor look? I think you have convinced me this is the best choice for our home as well.
I am always amazed at how attractive these inexpensive improvements look after they are finished. I wish I had been this imaginative when my husband and I were newly weds 54 years ago. I loved doing things like this. Great job. Keep sending posts.
Thanks Bonnie! Guess what?? I thought the same thing when I was doing the project and when I was looking back at the pictures. This project gives people the option to do a completely different grout color and tile then what you could find in a store. I just love that!!!
These 20 mm thick porcelain tiles surpass the high performance, functionality and aesthetics of natural materials used in flooring, which enables their use in exterior environments and high transit areas.
