Hello All,
The annual meeting for the Anchorage Interfaith and Interagency Disaster Recovery Committee (AIIDRC) is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 24, immediately following the AKVOAD meeting. Anyone may attend. We are looking for new board members, so if you would like to help assist with long-term recovery, please attend.

I have attached minutes from the last annual meeting, as well as the bylaws.

Agenda:
+ Financial Report from Arlan
+ New Business/Open Disasters
+ Election of new board members

AIIDRC Mission

The mission of the Anchorage Interfaith and Interagency Disaster Recovery Committee is to coordinate the activities of faith-based and community-based voluntary organizations assisting victims of disaster within the Municipality of Anchorage, or other areas upon request.

Victims of natural disasters are generally assisted in three stages: response, relief, and recovery. Each stage has its own timetable, players, and duties. Response is the duty of fire fighters, police, search and rescue teams, medical personnel, etc. This takes place immediately after the disaster. After the fires are out, victims are rescued and utilities and community safety are restored, organizations such as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army begin their relief efforts. This involves mass feeding, clothing drives, emergency shelters, etc.

The recovery stage is the longest. It generally begins within 60 days of the disaster and can take six months to two years to complete. Cleaning up, repairing and rebuilding homes is the primary recovery activity. Victims are eligible for governmental assistance, but only up to ten thousand dollars to replace a home. Historically, it is the faith communities that step in to address the unmet needs that still exist after government agencies have left.

This is coordinated locally by interfaith committees. Sometimes they are called “unmet needs committees” or “long term recovery committees” or other names. Whatever they are called, they are vital to the recovery process. These local people are responsible for seeking out the needs in the community and for coordinating volunteer labor and financial and in-kind contributions.

National disaster response organizations rely on these committees to tell them what the needs are. An organization like Mennonite Disaster Service or the Methodist Volunteers in Mission won’t send volunteer builders unless there are local people who can tell them where to go. Organizations that provide materials or cash grants will not contribute funds unless there are local people working together to responsibly manage them.

The Anchorage Interfaith and Interagency Disaster Recovery Committee (AIIDRC) is an effort to do that. This is very similar to the interfaith group that formed in the valley after the Big Lake fires.
