Hi all

Is there an element for 'court'?

Related: My assumption has been that courtType ('to identify the string used by the document for the type of the court doing the judgment') is for 'Criminal', 'Civil', and the like; is it actually meant for 'High', 'Supreme', 'Appeal', etc?

Thanks in advance and best wishes

Edith

It can be used to identify any kind of court :

<meta>
<references...>
   <TLCOrganization eId="appealCourt" href="/akn/ontology/organization/appealsCourtOfXYZ" showAs=".... " />
</references>
</meta>
<judgmentBody>...
   <courtType refersTo="#appealCourt">Appeals Court of XYZ</courtType>
</judgmentBody>

Dear Edith,

I am happy to say that in the next version of AKN we will have a new element named <court> for annotating the part of the document related to the composition of the court/coram including the legal formula when it exists. An example from a ZA jundgment here after:

<court refersTo="#coram">
        <p>
                <b>CORAM:</b>
                <judge eId="judge_01" refersTo="#Scott">SCOTT</judge>,
                <judge eId="judge_02" refersTo="#Farlam">FARLAM</judge>,
                <judge eId="judge_03" refersTo="#Brand">BRAND</judge>,
                <judge eId="judge_04" refersTo="#Lewis">LEWIS</judge> ET
                <judge eId="judge_05" refersTo="#Jafta" as="#jja">JAFTA</judge> JJA
        </p>
</court>

For the <courtType>, it is used for annotating any typology of the court: civil, criminal, etc.. You should specify the semantic using  @refersTo="#civil" using the <references> block as Ashok already shows to you in his example.

However we use <courtType> not in <judgmentBody> but in the <header> and it is used for the branch of the court: civil, labour, criminal
We use <docAuthority> for the institution/organization and <courtType> for the matter/qualification.
Examples:
                <docAuthority refersTo="#Scoa"> SUPREME COURT OF REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA</docAuthority>
                <courtType>(Civil Jurisdiction)</courtType>

All the best and super ciao,
Monica

Many thanks Ashok and Monica

I am indeed working on marking up the <header> of a judgment.

I'll use <docAuthority> for the court and <courtType> for the type as suggested, and look forward to using <court> when it becomes available.

All the best!

Edith
