KOLKATA: All three action areas of Rajarhat New Town are set to get parks and community markets. A big cricket ground on the lines of the Eden Gardens and a Milan Mela-like fair ground are also in the offing.

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will soon start working on these plans. It has been decided that the community markets will be set up at Action Areas IC, IIC, ID and IID and the parks will be developed at Action Areas IIB and IIC. A senior citizens' park will also be set up. All the parks will be developed in a way that these fall in line with the proposed green walkway that the authorities have planned to set up in the township.

The authorities are also working on setting up a big cricket ground at Action Area IID that will have a gallery and a pavilion. A permanent fair ground on the lines of Milan Mela ground off EM Bypass will be set up in Action Area-I. A 'Banglar Haat' is also coming up beside the eco-tourism park where exhibition of handicrafts items will be held.

The authorities have decided to offer incentives to developers who promote solar energyaccording to the Bengal municipal rules. Only a few weeks ago, the Centre approved the master plan placed by the NKDA authorities to develop the township as a solar city. The master plan includes ways in which solar and renewable energy can be used in the township using energy-efficient devices and use of conventional energy reduced.

On Tuesday, state urban development minister Firhad Hakim inaugurated a subway at Nababpur stretching almost a kilometre. The subway is stated to be one of the largest in the eastern region of the country with 10 entry and exit points. To ensure that pedestrians use the subway and don't spill over on the road, there will be railings along the roadside. An idol immersion ghat was also inaugurated at Action Area II.

Several other development works are on the cards in New Town. Rajarhat Road at the end of Action Area II, which leads to VIP Road from Chinar Park More, will be strengthened and repaired. The work will be taken up from the VIP Road-crossing at Jora Mandir to the Rajarhat Mor, which is an 8km stretch. Also, the authorities have planned to set up a post office each at all three action areas.
