Deb contended that they were facing problems in the implementation of projects in New Town that involved land. “There may be difference of opinion, but in other states, leaders of all political parties come together when it comes to the question of development. But here, if we ask Trinamool to come to Delhi with us, they refuse to cooperate. It has become a habit for Trinamool to oppose every development project Deb pointed out that not only were they facing opposition from a section of Trinamool men to the installation of four electric towers in Chapna mouza, but were also finding it hard to get some land near Bantala to set up a solid waste management ground. “Mamata herself passes through New Town to reach the airport. She wants to extend the Metro routes, whose alignment will pass through New Town. It’s us who have to give her the land,” he said. Meanwhile, finance minister Asim Dasgupta laid the foundation stone for a 5-km, 10-lane corridor connecting the Rajarhat main road to NH-34 near Madhyamgram. The corridor will have three-lane carriageways and two service roads on each side. “According to estimates, around 45,000 cars travel from Chingrighata on E M Bypass to the airport every day. Once the new road comes up, it will help ease traffic movement at the airport junction to some extent by diverting about 20,000 vehicles through this stretch towards NH-34. Also, once this road comes up, areas falling on the route will be developed and around 1 lakh jobs created,” said Dasgupta. A sum of Rs 42.12 crore will be spent to build the road and the work is scheduled to get over within 14 months, said Dasgupta. Around 83.52 acres are required for the project, of which the Hidco authorities have so far acquired 58.48 acres. HRBC has been entrusted with the job of constructing the road. Dasgupta has suggested that toll be collected from heavy vehicles using the corridor and the money collected be used to repair roads in New Town. Dasgupta said the finance department has sanctioned Rs 500 crore for the construction of 5,000 houses in rural areas for the minorities. |
