Salon'da Söyleşi: Eski Batı Nedir?
Maria Hlavajova, "eski Batı" kavramını ve bu adı taşıyan uzun soluklu projeyi anlatacağı bir konuşma için Salon'un konuğu oluyor.
"Eski Batı" kavramı, bugün "Batı" olarak andığımız bölgeyi ve sanatını, kendi yarattığı hegemoni temelli anlatıdan kopararak yeniden ele almayı sağlayacak ve başka türlü bir dünya düşünebilme olasılığı yaratacak bir araç olarak ortaya atıldı. ESKİ BATI projesi, 2008-2013 yılları arasında sürdürülen çok yönlü ve uluslararası bir araştırma, eğitim, yayım ve sergi projesi. Projenin, güncel sanat ve teoriden yola çıkarak: (a) 1989'da yaşanan politik, kültürel, sanatsal ve ekonomik olayların dünya (ve "Batı") üzerindeki etkileri üzerine düşünmek; (b) komünizm sonrası ve sömürgecilik sonrası düşüncelerle diyalog sağlayarak geçtiğimiz yirmi yılın küresel tarihlerini yeniden ele almak ve (c) farklılıkları tanıyarak, eşitlik ve "tek dünya" kavramları doğrultusunda evirilen "blok sonrası" bir geleceğe dair spekülasyonlarda bulunmak gibi amaçları var.
Salon'da gerçekleştirilecek konuşma, bu proje kapsamında gerçekleştirilecek 2. ESKİ BATI Araştırma Kongresi'ne giden yolda, İstanbul ve Türkiye'nin sanatsal ve entelektüel sahnesinde bir diyalog zemini açmayı hedefliyor. Kongre, Utrecht'ten BAK (basis voor actuele kunst) ve Amsterdam'dan SKOR tarafından, İKSV işbirliğiyle 4-6 Kasım 2010 tarihlerinde İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi'nde gerçekleştirilecek.

Talk at Salon: What is Former West?
In an informal talk, Maria Hlavajova will introduce the notion of "former West," the basis (and the title) of a long-term, multifaceted international research, education, publishing, and exhibition project (2008-2013).
The notion of the "former West" functions as a proposition to rethink the so-called West and its art away from its uninterrupted self-narration of hegemony and to imagine the new possibility this presents for imagining the world otherwise than how we know it. From within the field of contemporary art and theory, the project FORMER WEST attempts to (1) reflect upon the changes introduced to the world-and thus to the so-called West-by the political, cultural, artistic, and economic events of 1989; (2) engage in rethinking the global histories of the last two decades in dialogue with post-communist and postcolonial thought; and (3) speculate about a "post-bloc" future that recognizes differences yet evolves through the political imperative of equality and the notion of "one world."
The talk is organised in order to open a dialogue with the artistic and intellectual scene of Istanbul and Turkey on the way towards the realization of the 2nd FORMER WEST Research Congress that will take place in Istanbul on 4-6 November 2010. The Congress is realized by BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht and SKOR, Amsterdam, in collaboration with İKSV, and hosted by the Istanbul Technical University.
