GPA is one of those things that is set up when you first start using PowerSchool, and then you rarely touch it again. I have found it challenging to work with because of the number of variables surrounding GPA and the lack of helpful documentation.
I suggest you start by looking at the GPA calculations you already have and see what they do and how they are used. I would NOT change anything, just see what you have.
Then, if you find that you do not have a GPA calculation that gives you what you need, you can create one. Plan on testing it out, making changes, and testing it a few times.
I recently created honor roll GPA calculations and found this one to give me the unweighted Q1 GPA I wanted for K-8th Q1 grade students. Of course, this only works after Q1 grades are stored.
Creating a GPA calculation that references the school year will require that you update it every year, so add this to your calendar/checklist.
I do not use PS to search for GPA’s, so I’m not sure how that function works. I prefer check my GPA’s by adding it to the ‘Cumulative Info’ student page or exporting it. It sounds like exporting it would work best for you, and both ways use the same GPA data tag.
To add it to the Cumulative Info page, go to School Management > Academics > GPA Info for Student Screens.
Using the calculation method above, it would look like this. You can name yours whatever you want.
The other way to check it would be to do a Quick Export and use the same code from the Cumulative Info page.
If this is all new to you, opening a support ticket asking for help creating a new GPA calculation may be helpful. Sometimes, you can get lucky and be assigned someone who can explain things and work through it on the phone/remote session.

- You cannot delete a GPA calculation method after creating it

- I was told that if you leave the ‘Calculation type’ blank, it will behave as though you selected ‘cumulative’.
